Here's my stance on Cygames' announcement re: their new AI subsidiary. I'll make a video, but tl;dr: AI is now an industry standard tool that Cygames is looking to leverage and cash in on. I have reasons to believe they won't or will sparingly use it on Umamusume.
1. This AI subsidiary is explicitly made to provision AI tools and services. This to me sounds like their primary objective is to sell these assets over using them, even though they might.
2. If you look at Cyberagent's existing models on huggingface, a majority of them are text-based LLM offshoots of Deepseek made to provide translations and preferred answers to text prompts. The image asset one I've seen, markupdm, is used to generate alternate mockups of promotional material by swapping fonts and generic graphics (see attached).
3. The job listing regarding Image Generation can refer to various different stages of production. It can be used to create early concepts, or to allow creative teams to pick from various generated mockups (wholly or just parts of them). It could ALSO be used for final production and design, but I highly doubt that it will for reasons below.
4. Cygames has set an extremely high bar for quality re: Umamusume. So much so, they founded an entire animation studio, hiring many select human talents because only they could be trusted to create Cinderella Gray, Road to the Top, and Beginning of a New Era. There is no way they will eliminate or streamline their creative processes such that they fail to meet said bar. To do so would jeapordize their rampant growth, which makes no sense for any corpo to do.
5. Characters are Umamusume's most important assets. This includes the VAs who double as idols in live performances. The fans won't forgive Cygames if they were to trample over their rights or exploit them with AI. If they use voice generation, I think that is extremely risky and foolish (and thus unlikely), but if they were to do so, I think they would ensure the prosperity of their VAs.
AI is an industry standard. We've seen Clair Obscur admit to use it. Graphic designers are being taught to use it today to streamline workflows. Arc Raiders uses AI to create more immersive gameplay, including enemy behavior and enemy animations. The fact that Arcs have seldom few canned animations enhances the experience greatly. All to say, it can assist in creating great works.
It can also be used irresponsibly. It's as much tool as it is a weapon, we've seen this recently with Grok. We've seen it create slop like Amazon's AI dubs on Banana Fish and NGNL to name a few, as well Winning Derby, a cheap AI slop knock-off of Umamusume.
I believe in the Cygames that created the IP I love. I believe that they are a corporation which will prioritize profit and growth, and thus recognize the great risk involved in experimenting with AI on successful and growing IPs that they own like Umamusume.
I predict that if they were to use it, they would use it mostly on their new IPs and games that are currently in development. That said, I will give them the benefit of the doubt that, if they do choose to risk using AI with their existing brand, that they would do so responsibly and to solely raise the bar of quality, with creative artists ultimately at the helm of control.
I give them this benefit of the doubt because they founded an entire animation studio to ensure and enhance the quality behind their greatest IP. Until they break that trust by introducing AI slop, I will continue to do so.
I encourage people who are upset about this to continue expressing outrage against Cygames for their myopic announcement. I want them to be afraid of utilizing AI recklessly, because they should be. I will not stand for the reckless destruction of an IP I love.
