Two years ago @elonmusk told us his ‘nutty’ idea to ‘catch the largest and heaviest flying object ever made and pluck it out of the air.’
Looks like it wasn’t so ‘nutty’ after all.

I wanted to be heartbroken watching a tragic father-son dynamic unfold onscreen, but instead ended up heartbroken about how #Animal lost focus in following through on that promise
The ambition to make an epic Scorsese-like saga is there: the making is fantastic and we get to see glimpses of greatness in the first half fuelled by a powerful score, a scarily good and impossible-to-look-away-from Ranbir, superb supporting cast, lots and lots of style, an effort to do justice to different cultures portrayed onscreen and a raw anger and energy that's seldom seen in Bollywood films today
There's tons of problematic actions, ideologies and dialogues esp coming from the main character but
1) each of us have our own yardstick of what's problematic
2) I've personally enjoyed classic films that happened to feature similar problematic characters(Goodfellas, Casino, Scarface, Wolf of Wall Street)
But I don't think problematic characters or their dynamics is the main issue of a film, as long as the story does what it set out to do, or give the character an arc, an opportunity to change and earn a chance at redemption
This is where #Animal falls short: great films become statements, but it feels like the filmmaker was more interested in making the statements itself the film, putting the emotional core in the backseat and letting his penchance to provoke take the steering wheel
Somewhere through the middle of the film, the focus changed from "how impactful can I make this father-son bond?"
To
"How many times per minute can I piss off these critics?"
Ever since that first title announcement with that haunting whistle and monologue came out almost 2 years ago, I've been building this up in my head, wanting it to be epic...and maybe the fault is nobody's but mine
An audience's heart wants what it wants(and so does a filmmaker's)
“None of you seem to understand. I’m not locked in here with you. You’re locked in here with me!”
Perhaps the coolest project I’ve ever worked on. Happy Anniversary #Watchmen
