In the mid 1950’s, the horse stable was lifted out of the sand and turned into a home, adding two bedrooms, a kitchen, bath, and screened porch at that time.

As an important part of Outer Banks history, the Coastal Cottage was originally built to stable horses for the Kitty Hawk Lifesaving station in the late 1800’s. The horses were used to transport life boats from the boat house to the water and back again when needed.
