Everyone can spot a great player. But not everyone can spot a player that has not peaked yet.
That is why I travel as much as I do, and invest so much resource and time into watching games. As a former college coach at a D1 mid major I had to assess the “potential” long term if a player got into the right environment.
Rarely did I get a player from a major club that was being highly recruited by others. I had to dig and find diamonds in the rough.
Most of the time I spend with college coaches I discuss the intangibles that happen off the ball about players I work with. Their movement off the ball, their positioning and angles, their ability to cooperate with others in the field, and their willingness to chase and defend. Those are things that a 2-3 minute highlight video can’t replicate or show.
What I do takes time, and it takes an infinite amount of patience.
Look forward to seeing guys I work with at MLS Flex in Maryland next week.

Recruits:
Perception is unfortunately your reality in the world of subjective sports.
I see a lot of kids miss out on wonderful opportunities to play because they put a higher value on Division than overall experience.
My experience was quite different.
I was lucky as a player. What started out as not having any options ended up being an incredible journey for me.
Basically a roster spot was given to me after a gap year at a 1st year JUCO after being told that I was a) not good enough b) academic enough c) had a budget to match coming out of high school by college coaches. 2 years later I was a national champion and awarded one of the highest awards for GK’s at the NJCAA and later elected into the NJCAA Hall of Fame.
Then the unthinkable happened. The dream school for most American youth soccer players called offered me with a full scholarship.
That was the start of a lifelong tie to one of the most iconic programs in Men’s soccer.
However, if I had to look back, my relationship with my NJCAA teammates has been stronger over the years. Why?
Freshmen and sophomores tend to connect more than freshman with juniors and seniors.
Lastly, if I could do it all over again I wish I could have done a semester abroad as a college student. That is almost a non negotiable as a D1 athlete.
Right now at 16/17 you don’t see the big picture. Trust me when I say that playing time is the number one complaint and the number one killer of culture and the catalyst behind energy vampires in a locker room.
Go where you are not just wanted, but go most importantly where you are NEEDED the most. You control the final outcome.
