With so many of our classes named after birds, it's fitting for the students to hear from an expert on them! Clay, an environmental educator & artist with @GGAudubon, visited first grade today to give presentations about birds & lead the class in a scientific drawing tutorial.
Our 8th Grade Humanities students put together a guide to help local voters understand this year's propositions and learn about the candidates! Last week, they went out into the Mission and talked with our neighbors about the importance of voting as they handed out the guides.
Today, we are happy to celebrate National Coming Out Day. We know that differences lift us, and we are proud of the welcoming and inclusive community at CDS.
Our students were treated to a lively music performance yesterday by La Familia Peña-Govea, a local group that performs songs from Mexico and other parts of Latin America. They soon had the students and teachers up on their feet singing and dancing!
Another terrific Back to School Night for the early childhood and lower school programs last evening! Thanks to all who attended and a big shout out to our amazing team of educators. Parents were given a variety of assignments, so it really was going back to school!
Thanks to the community for their donations of clothes to children in Kenya! After our annual donation drive, a CDS family delivered 8 suitcases of clothes to a village near Kilifi, and they also helped construct a borehole so the villagers can pump fresh water from the ground.
Our Third Grade Pelicans teachers wanted to make their room unique, and the palm tree in our front yard inspired them to design a book tree. The facilities squad constructed it over the summer, and now it's the newest "branch" of the CDS learning experience!
This week, our 8th Grade Drama students gave their first show before a full audience in over two years. They presented scenes from plays ranging from Ancient Greece to the 21st century, plus their own adaptation of Love, Simon. A great way to end their careers as CDS thespians!
"Keep your laws off my body!" Middle school students broke out to march and rally in SF to STOP the assault on the rights of women. One spoke: "I am 13 and I should not have to be doing this!" But here they are. #RiseUp4AbortionRights#Green4Abortion
Here are some of the highlights from our first-ever Lower School Art Show, which features at least one work of art from every student between first and fourth grades:
Thanks to James Shields, author of "The Hip Hop Coloring Book" and "Women of the Black Panther Party," for visiting our kindergarten students last week to share his art and show the kids how to make a Sankofa sculpture!
Thanks to all those who came and supported our seventh graders' annual Soup for Change event! They raised nearly $1,500 for a partnership with @PrecitaEyesLove and @thewomensbldgSF to help raise awareness about and prevention of sexual assault.
Middle School Director Chris Wachsmith was quoted in this Washington Post article, and the protest was also covered by BBC News. Kudos to our CDS activists for leading the way during this historical moment. https://t.co/8CsRi4nJzk
Our eighth graders (who are visiting the capitol this week on a school trip) were right in the middle of it all this morning, protesting in support of abortion rights outside the Supreme Court:
Plenty of activity on the yard, including our weekly assembly, a fundraiser supporting people affected by the war in Ukraine, and our beloved sheep getting their annual haircuts!
For more on helping those impacted by the war, see @KyivIndependent, @UNICEF, and @voices_org_ua.
Our Shared Space of the Week is Children's Day School @CDSSF whose parklet is just outside their middle school campus. It has been a popular spot for lunches and fundraisers like @Muttville Senior Dog Rescue and for @LarkinStreet Youth Services .
