Of course they have the right. However, I believe they should not politicize it, which they obviously did, and quite successfully, judging by the replies. I donโt care if Trump believes he won it, of course he didnโt. Everyone knows that. But by releasing this unnecessary statement, the foundation is playing a rhetorical game that is beneath them.
@V_rainorshine@NobelPeaceOslo It should be below the level of an institution like the Nobel Foundation to respond and engage with the โthirst of a politician.โ
I understand that you dislike Trump and that you will dislike him regardless. That is your position and that is fine.
Political prisoners are being released as we speak!!! and after decades of repression and terror, people are experiencing real change. Using Venezuelan suffering as a talking point to justify political hatred is inaccurate and does NOTHING to help the Venezuelan people.
He recognized that his attire piqued the interest of the French and astutely utilized it as leverage. IMO, this was a strategic negotiation tactic rooted in an understanding of cultural and contextual nuances. I think it suggests that recognizing the importance of cultural context may be important when establishing rapport. Even when that means wearing a suit or not.
Standardized tracking would force people to actually look at the numbers and make decisions or judge performance based on whatโs real, and somewhat objective (Like inflation or IR). We desperately need a data-driven approach to government, and tbh the younger generations are already on board. We deal with data naturally now, even when some don't realize it.
I shared this note with the Washington Post team this morning:
Iโm writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages.
We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. Weโll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.
There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the readerโs doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.
I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of Americaโs success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical โ it minimizes coercion โ and practical โ it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.
I offered David Shipley, whom I greatly admire, the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer wasnโt โhell yes,โ then it had to be โno.โ After careful consideration, David decided to step away. This is a significant shift, it wonโt be easy, and it will require 100% commitment โ I respect his decision. Weโll be searching for a new Opinion Editor to own this new direction.
Iโm confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. Iโm excited for us together to fill that void.
