“If [extremists] are consumed with talking to their bank about their mortgage, they have less time to organise the next attack or the next kneecapping. You reduce the time they have for dangerous activities by increasing the time they need just to manage their private lives.
“Strategies like this recognise that while you cannot entirely eradicate the problem overnight, you can severely reduce its scale and weed out the deeply ideologically committed from those who simply get involved for social or financial reasons.”

Rising antisemitism on Europe's streets and growing hostility toward Israel within European institutions are not unrelated.
This important study from @JewishPolicy raises serious questions about double standards and their wider impact at a time when Jews across Europe are under threat and at risk.

The question posed in this @FT article about ARCHER at House 88 — “Should the Auschwitz commandant’s house be hosting exhibitions?” — deserves an unequivocal "yes."
Such places are not monuments of admiration but sites of historical confrontation. Today, this particular site, the former home of Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Höss and his family, helps demonstrate how atrocity was embedded in ordinary domestic life and bureaucratic routine, rather than existing as an incomprehensible aberration outside society.
To open to the public these spaces is not to dignify the perpetrators, but to expose the unsettling normality through which evil operated. The value lies precisely in forcing visitors to confront this proximity between everyday life and horrific acts committed in the name of ideology – an especially pertinent issue today.
Equally important, as Raphael Minder’s article notes, is that the victims’ perspective must not be absent.
Next month, ARCHER at House 88 will explore the life of Lore Sternfeld, a young Jewish woman who made film lenses of the type used by Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl, before being deported and murdered at Auschwitz.
Historical understanding requires both elements: how the perpetrators lived, and how the victims were erased.
“Africa is the most important area of operations for Islamic State. But Nigeria is a particular focus because it involves violence against Christians that resonates with Trump’s political base."

"The Birdman of Auschwitz: Science and the Failure of Conscience is an exhibition as unsettling as its setting: the former home of Rudolf Höss, commandant of Auschwitz."
"In 1947, Höss was hanged on the other side of the wall that separated the house that he and his family called “paradise” from the camp where he oversaw the murder of at least 1.1mn people, most of them Jews."
