Recent sunny weather has seen the first emergence of #Crocus on our farm and Palace House. These late winter/early spring flowers close at night & in dull weather, opening up their petals in the sun. Check out the comparison!

Brief encounter? These are cotton pants we buried in April to test the microbiological activities of the soil. Woodland habitat was the top pair, while the lower was in the vegetable patch and completely biodegraded bar the elastic, suggesting increased bacterial activity there
Common toads living in trees? Volunteers searching for dormice found these amphibians dwelling up to 3 meters high! While reasons behind this arboreal behaviour remain unknown, research from @froglifers & @Cambridge_Uni suggests they may be searching for food or evading predators
In February we joined over 1,900 other farmers for the Big Farmland Bird Count, & the stats are in... 130 species spotted, with 7 of the top 25 being on the Red List for Birds of Conservation Concern: Starling, lapwing, fieldfare, linnet, house sparrow, yellowhammer and skylark!
Things are hotting up at the CET! Construction of the Fort Climate Centre is under way with huge thanks to Mr. Fort. The space will be dedicated to facilitating the teaching of climate and environmental science, encouraging positive behavioural change towards a greener future.

Today, the AHDB and BBRSC have announced 10 new projects with £500k funding. Sustainability-focused, they aim to help UK farming transition to net zero by 2040. Topics addressed include technology, regenerative agriculture and development of new resistance mechanisms.
The NSA have encouraged consumers to try sustainably produced lamb or mutton this Christmas. A nutrient-rich alternative, it supports local farmers and has a reduced environmental impact (thanks to extensive grassland required for free-range sheep acting as a vital carbon sink!)
