Liverpool Cathedral of Christ the King, UK
1st image is Pugin's design for a cathedral in 1850's. After building started the bishop decided they didn't need a cathedral and said they need more schools.
In the end Frederick Gibberd design was chosen.
The design met all the qualifications put forth by the bishop including being modern and express the new "spirit of the liturgy".
An architect was hired to scale back Lutyen's design, depicted in the 4th image.
Architect Adrian Gilbert Scott proposed this but it was soon to be determined unattainable.
In 1958 they held a contest for a new cathedral design. 300 people submitted designs.
