Palmer’s success ended up being the best thing that ever happened to Joe Shields. The moment Palmer exploded, Shields gained untouchable status and suddenly Chelsea started looking more and more like a retirement home for ex-Manchester City academy products.

Every transfer window feels the same: another familiar name, another former City kid, another excuse. At some point people have to ask whether these signings are genuinely for Chelsea’s benefit or simply because certain people have too much influence behind the scenes.
