For years, James Gandolfini and Lorraine Bracco shared a private romance that existed almost entirely away from the cameras. According to Bracco, their relationship began quietly during the early years of The Sopranos and developed into something far deeper than either of them expected. They deliberately kept it away from the press and from the enormous attention surrounding the series, allowing the relationship to remain one of the few parts of their lives that belonged entirely to them.

Bracco described Gandolfini as intensely affectionate and completely different in private from the troubled man audiences knew as Tony Soprano. Their relationship was passionate but complicated, with periods when they would pull away from one another before eventually finding their way back. On set they remained professional, particularly during the famously intimate therapy scenes between Tony and Dr. Melfi, while almost nobody watching realized how much history supposedly existed between the two actors once the cameras stopped rolling.

Gandolfini’s death in 2013 meant that much of their story remained untold, and Bracco kept that part of their relationship private for years afterward. Looking back at photographs of them together now gives those moments an entirely different meaning. Behind one of television’s most fascinating onscreen relationships was supposedly another love story altogether, one that existed quietly for years and ended long before either of them could ever tell the world where it might have gone.
