The U.S. Forest Service intends to spray glyphosate and other toxic herbicides across 156,000 acres of the Lake Tahoe basin. Tell the White House & Congress to stop the spraying. SIGN THE PETITION: https://t.co/9OjFIcxSTJ
Katherine Levy recently moved back to live out her retirement along the lake’s north shore only to discover the government plan to spray glyphosate and 4 other toxic herbicides within national forest property that abuts the community’s cherished lake. “I was horrified to find out what has been going on,” Levy said. Levy is among a number of Lake Tahoe-area residents and officials who are fighting to block or alter the U.S. Forest Service project, which is aimed at restoration of areas damaged by the 2021 Caldor fire.
“It is a major concern for all of us,” said Cody Bass, mayor of South Lake Tahoe. “I had no clue that glyphosate was still being used in the forest. It was kind of a shock to me that we know what we know about it and still use it on public lands.”
“People come here from around the world because of its purity and natural beauty,” said Hannah Teter, who lives in the South Lake Tahoe area, close to the area affected by the Caldor fire, and works at a local wakesurfing charter company. “The idea of spraying thousands of gallons of herbicides across the Tahoe basin in an effort to dictate which species regrow after a natural wildfire is deeply troubling,” Teter said.

The reaction hasn't quite reached "Break out the pitchforks" status yet, but it's safe to say some T-Mobile customers are having a very bad, terrible, no-good day. https://t.co/TufwnMFy4g

Study: Chlorpyrifos Insecticide Linked to More Than Double the Risk of Parkinson’s Disease. A widely used agricultural pesticide may pose a greater threat to brain health than previously recognized. Scientists at UCLA have linked long-term exposure to chlorpyrifos with a sharply increased risk of Parkinson’s disease. People exposed to the chemical near their homes were more than twice as likely to develop the condition. Laboratory studies showed that chlorpyrifos damages dopamine neurons and interferes with the brain’s ability to remove toxic protein buildup. https://t.co/dQO76mTNUd
The EU banned chlorpyrifos in 2020 and U.S. states California, Hawaii, New York, and Oregon banned the insecticide in 2024. Previous studies have also found that chlorpyrifos is neurotoxic and especially harmful to developing babies and children. But the U.S. EPA continues to allow its use on 11 crops, including those that children love to eat: apples, cherries, citrus, peaches, and strawberries. Eating organic is the best way to avoid consuming residues of this toxic insecticide.
Oats are one food you should never eat unless they’re organic. 🌾
People who eat non-organic oats have been found to have twice the level of glyphosate in their urine compared to those who don’t.
Why? Higher levels of glyphosate are often found in oats and non-GMO grains because they are sprayed right before harvest to dry them out—a practice called desiccation.
On top of glyphosate, a 2024 study detected chlormequat in 92% of non-organic oat-based foods tested.
Toxicological studies suggest exposure to chlormequat can impact reproductive health and development even at low levels.
Choosing organic oatmeal, oat flour, and granola significantly reduces your exposure to both.
🥣 And beyond what’s in the oats, what about how you prep them?
Nature’s Path clearly (and rightfully) advises consumers NOT to heat their oats in plastic! Their packaging explicitly tells you to pour the oats into a glass or ceramic bowl before adding boiling water or microwaving.
Nature’s Path gets it right. 🙌 Wouldn’t it be great if all food companies followed suit?

💪Muscle is your secret weapon against diabetes!
A huge new study tracked ~480,000 adults for 14 years. People with “sarcopenic obesity” (too much fat + weak/low muscle) had over 3.5 times higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those with healthy body composition.
That risk was even higher than obesity OR low muscle alone — especially in women and people under 60.
Bottom line: It’s not just about losing fat. Building and keeping muscle matters a lot for preventing diabetes (and more).
Strength training + good protein + movement are game-changers!
✨Remember, muscle is a metabolic powerhouse!

Happy 90th birthday to Pema Chödrön!
In this teaching adapted from "The Ordinary Magic of Meditation" edited by John Welwood, Pema Chödrön reflects on the power of ritual and holding both the sadness of the human condition as well as the power and vision of the Great Eastern Sun.
"What made me think of ritual as the joining of the sadness and pain of samsara with the vision of the Great Eastern Sun was that somehow it’s simply using ordinary things to express our appreciation for life. The sun comes up in the morning, we can use the sound of a gong to call us to the shrine room, we can put our hands together and bow to each other, we can hold up our eating bowls with three fingers in the same way that people have been doing for centuries. Through these rituals we express our appreciation for the fact that there’s food and objects and the richness of the world.
Genuine, heartfelt ritual helps us reconnect with power and vision as well as with the sadness and pain of the human condition.
So whether it’s smoking a cigarette or drinking a cup of tea or making your bed or washing the dishes—whatever it might be—it’s ritual in the sense of doing it properly, if you can hold the sadness in your heart as well as the vision of the Great Eastern Sun." —Pema Chödrön
