UPDATE: The Canada Day fireworks scheduled for this evening have been postponed due to poor weather conditions. The fireworks have been rescheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, July 2. Further updates will be shared via the municipality’s social media accounts.
Update: Last night, we approved Nova Scotia’s request for federal assistance. We’re deploying @CanadianForces members and resources to support wildfire response efforts and to help keep people safe. We’ll continue to make sure Nova Scotians have the support they need.
To help avoid any new wildfires, the Province is increasing the fine for breaking the provincewide burn ban to $25,000.
Illegal burning has to stop, and all Nova Scotians need to do their part – follow the burn ban, stay out of the woods and help keep your communities safe.
Last night Halifax SAR continued to operate in support of the Hammonds Plains wildfire efforts, assisting @RCMPNS, @hfxgov EM, @hfxfire with manning checkpoints and conducting patrols of the evacuation area.
Our teams of firefighters and first responders continue to battle the fires today. I'm so grateful for the incredible work they are doing throughout the province. Thank you.
We also have support from out of province and are actively working to secure more. #novascotia

Again, I appreciate everybody's kind words. These are unusual times, and there's a ton of focus on things right now, but tweeting fire news is how I've occupied my free time for many years now. It's a privilege to detail the actual heroic work that takes place on the front lines.
Just want to reiterate that as far as we know right now, there has been no loss of life. This is remarkable given the conditions on Sunday. Some dangerous and heroic rescues were made. The property damage is catastrophic and terrible, but this fact is something to be grateful for
We have a report of a new fire in the Sandy Lake West area of Hammonds Plains. Air and ground support are being rerouted to the area. This is all the information we have at this time, we will continue to provide updates as they become available.
⚠️Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel due to ongoing fires in the region.
REMINDER: the use of ALL off-highway vehicles is banned within the limits of the municipality while the State of Local Emergency is in effect.
