For Father's Day, our staff share their experiences with parental incarcerated.
“The delicate walls that protected our physical, psychological, and emotional safety crumbled on those days, and years later, the bricks we’ve replaced still don’t quite fit.”

“There is no way to incarcerate our way out of drug addiction … there is nothing about prisons—the way they are built, the way they are designed, the way they are financed, the way they are structured—that is meant to help deal with drug addiction.” @biancatylek
Today I testified in Congress. I was asked if I thought slavery still exist.
“Yes. It’s not just that it exists in practice, but that, in the 13th Amendment, there is an exception that reads ‘except as punishment for a crime,’ which means, by law, slavery is still allowed.”
President of @NAACPNYS, Dr Hazel Dukes, has weighed in on free prison calls. “I would be remiss not to urge your support for a policy that would bring tremendous financial relief and healing to Black families.”
@GovKathyHochul@AndreaSCousins @CarlHeastie where do you stand?
BREAKING: The House just passed a bill that would ban the government from buying Americans' data, instead of getting the constitutionally-required warrant.
This bipartisan effort should raise an alarm for the government — our Fourth Amendment rights are not for sale.

Across the US, prisons & jails are struggling to maintain staffing levels. These staffing shortages present an opportunity to move toward evidence-based solutions for community safety that exist outside the criminal legal system.

Thank you to @jamaaltbailey and @HarveyforNY for leading the efforts to make prison communication free for incarcerated people and their loved ones in New York!
This legislation will save New Yorkers tens of millions of dollars every year and keep families connected.
For the past 11 years, @lspcmovement and AOUON have organized Q4D to provide system-impacted people the opportunity to advocate as experts about the realities of the law.

Suggesting that convicts should not complain about their conditions is like telling a homeless person to deal with the weather, or a poor person to suck it up and live in poverty. Just because our actions led to our existence, doesn’t mean they are justifiable conditions.
The cost of imprisoning one person in CA has increased by more than 90% in the past decade, reaching a record-breaking $132,860/year. Advocates argue the governor's new budget must include closure of five more prisons.

@AsmMiaBonta has introduced AB 2709, a bill that will ensure that personal visits
are offered to individuals incarcerated in California state prisons and their families in a manner
that facilitates strengthening and building bonds between incarcerated individuals.
The percentage of people in prison who are 55 or older has shot up in the last 30 years & it’s not just a matter of people aging behind bars. Older people’s share of arrests have also quadrupled.
Why are we putting more older people in jail and prison? Is this “smart on crime”?
People who go to prison/jail immediately become customers of predatory companies that charge shady fees for them to make phone calls or receive money from their families. @FTC needs to crack down on the companies charging these junk fees. Learn more: https://t.co/RrPjwUmDAb
