Classic nicknames #1
“The Butcher of Bilbao”
Andoni Goikoetxea.
The Athletic Bilbao centre-back became infamous for his crunching challenges on Maradona & Schuster in the 1980s.
@obrien_jonathan Me and a couple of old mates still harp on about his performances at Espana ‘82. He was fantastic to watch. Likewise, didn’t make the connection with Mohamed until about 6pm tonight when my son was raving about having him in his fantasy team today!
Footballers making music… 🎶🦅
In the early 80s, 4 Lazio players stepped into the recording studio to help sing “Vola Lazio Vola” - the single would go on to become the club’s iconic anthem.

@obrien_jonathan Bull was decent Jonathan but the correct answer has to be John Sheridan. Was amazing for Wednesday in ‘91 when they got promoted and won the League Cup, the last 2nd tier team to win it. Genuine midfield playmakers were really rare back then too.
@obrien_jonathan Deffo. People like Infantino tend to just dig their heels in even further when they get criticised like this. Can’t see him leaving anytime soon unfortunately.
Happy birthday Jürgen Klinsmann.
The German striker was a WC winner at Italia’90 & a Euros winner at Euro’96.
He scored goals at all of his main clubs: Stuttgarter Kickers, Stuttgart, Inter, Monaco, Spurs & Bayern Munich.
Pre-season 1996.
#Juventus summer training camp.
New signing Zinédine Zidane with compatriot Didier Deschamps at the “Ettore Tesolin" athletics field, Aosta, Italy.
@JackieJameson84@obrien_jonathan He probably wasn’t as established as the others in the list but you’d still have thought they could see they’d got a player on their hands.
Happy birthday Hansi Müller
Gifted midfielder with a sweet left foot, he was one of Europe’s hottest talents after helping West Germany win Europa80 playing alongside fellow youngster Bernd Schuster.
Sadly his form dipped after moving from hometown club Stuttgart to Inter in 82
Happy birthday to Miguel Ángel Nadal.
aka “The Beast”.
Big physical defender, hence the nickname, Nadal started & ended his career with Real Mallorca & had 8 years in between with Barcelona, part of the so-called “Dream Team” of the Cruyff era of the 1990s.
@obrien_jonathan Pretty sure his parents were from one of the Balkan countries Jonathan. I remember watching Europa ‘80 as a kid and it was the first time I’d seen a proper midfield playmaker like him. Schuster as well - a really attacking and youthful combo.
Happy birthday Dino Baggio.
Ok, so he maybe wasn't as talented as his namesake, but as a defensive midfielder he was bloody good.
6 years as part of that great Parma side, as well as spells with Torino, Inter, Juve & Lazio.
Happy 124th birthday to Dutch club SBV Excelsior, formed #OnThisDay in 1902 in the Kralingen district of Rotterdam.
Nicknamed “The Kralingers”, they were one of the first working-class football clubs of the Netherlands.
Pre-season 1995, Inter.
Big-suit Friday.
Inter legend Giacinto Facchetti with 2 new signings from Argentina - Sebastián Rambert from Independiente and a young lad from Banfield who’d prove to be a half-decent signing, Javier Zanetti.
🎂 - Happy 124th birthday to Fluminense.
Formed on the 21st July 1902 by Oscar Cox in the aristocratic neighbourhood of Laranjeiras in Rio de Janeiro.
Where does the name Fluminense come from ?
It’s the original term given to people from Rio de Janeiro.
