Couple of things that upset me about this
A) it’s not holding. He chops his arm down and he lost his balance
B) this is very important. Holding is only supposed to be called if it could effect the play. The DE is double teamed and the ball is gone at the time of the “holding”. He’s nowhere near the QB.
Just an all time bad call. It’s an official looking to be part of the game.
LOL. Sure, let’s Zapruder this thing for fun. The BYU DB started impeding way before your photo’s frame with the hand holding . Any photo with the ball that close in the frame is after his initial impeding of the WR/hold here.
Then they start jockeying. I literally don’t care who won this game. But the reactions here make for a fascinating psychology experiment.
@BobJeff12334443 Love that second photo where one guy is looking back for the ball, and the other is looking to make sure he has a firm hold on what he’s grabbing.
No dog in the fight, but PI doesn’t get any clearer than what the BYU defensive back did on the final play of that game to Notre Dame’s Jaden Greathouse. That’s a flag. If you don’t have the temerity to throw that flag there in Provo, Utah in that moment then you shouldn’t be on the field as an official.

I was looking for this video. This easily could’ve been a taunting penalty on Miami QB Darian Mensah after his TD pass in the second OT. A flag would’ve moved the ball back to the 18 for the mandatory 2-point conversion try. He ran to the corner of the end zone to engage and taunt when Malachi Toney had moved in the opposite direction to celebrate Miami’s go-ahead TD.
The Canes are not running that slick Toney jet sweep WR pass for two if they’re pushed back to the 18. It didn’t matter in the end once the dubious holding call wiped out FSU’s matching touchdown. But this could’ve been a big no-call if FSU got to attempt its post-TD 2-point conversion.
Darian Mensah just did this to the ref and doesn’t get flagged??
Keep in mind, this should’ve been a 15 yard penalty before a crucial 2 pt conversion.
Anybody else in the country and that’s a personal foul. How is this not called?
You won the game and got away with one at the end. Just take the W, instead of insisting it was flawless and righteous . A former professional referee said it merited a flag. Don’t take my word for it. Take the word of the guy who has done the job and doesn’t want to have to criticize officials on a play like that, yet felt compelled to.

Defender initiated the contact before the ball was thrown. But if someone has a better angle, I’m happy to watch it. To me, it was only jostling between them after the defender impeded the WR first. Maybe, it’s defensive holding, but it’s something. Even Matt Austin, the ESPN officiating analyst, said it should’ve been a flag, and those guys are usually loath to criticize the officials. So, I think it’s clear it wasn’t a “play on” situation.
1. it wasn’t a hold on the first FSU TD
2. FSU player has 2 hands on ball while down but ball is in lap of Miami player, who doesn’t actually appear to have both hands on the ball
simultaneous possession?
