@Witherscbc Best wishes, Paul, in retirement (if that's the plan) & in painting & all things creative that lie ahead for you & Judy. You can certainly be proud of the substantial, thorough and effective work you have done as one of the most prolific & reliable NS journalists of your time.
@stphnmaher A fine tribute. The song is extraordinary, the performance by MacGowan and MacColl equally so. Genius, hope, addiction, despair, self-destruction, loathing, caring -- a hard, tender, honest fairytale of the mess of human lives and dreams. Two great artists now gone, too soon.
@deAdder I guess "too angry" applies only if your subject does not warrant moral outrage or ethical fire. I can't recall that ever being the case with your cartoons, Michael. You mock & burn subjects and behaviours that shock a decent conscience and deserve ridicule & public scorching.
@ForanKen Thanks, Ken. And for aspiring PMs: don't be glib/smug. Don't manipulate emotions or exploit life differences. You are not the font of all values. Don't presume your cause is so good, right, true & pure that you have a right to intervene in every aspect of everyone's life.
@ForanKen I would just like, in a PM, some reasonable competence in providing good public services at a cost people can afford, (2) some good will & tolerance toward the vast diversity of people who live in this country and some patience in respect to achieving hard but needed changes.
@DonMillsHFX Right, Don. This should be a national priority, as a railway was at Confederation. It should encompass all transportable energy, there is security in diversification. Quebec would benefit: no more Lac Megantic tragedies, the result of moving oil by rail.
@ForanKen That's a tough one, Ken. In fact, they're all hard to take. Re. that PP clip, I just can't watch a trite metaphor being beaten to a pulp. As for the frugal Harper paradise era, voters were plenty sick of him at the end. And he did turn budget surpluses into deficits.
@nspector4@ForanKen Seems CBC TV news audience has unsurprisingly shifted from TV 'prime time' to digital, where, on CBC or any platform, there is no prime time anymore. People now expect to check news when they want, not at fixed times. Morning radio still works as background to starting the day.
@paulkrugman Treasury has authority & duty to uphold validity of legally authorized (by Congress) federal debt/liabilities (14th amendment) & to prevent default by ignoring illegal debt-invalidating use of debt ceiling. Biden should order required debt issue, House GOP can sue & will lose.
@atRachelGilmore@WayeMason A Conservative government, in 1932, created the public broadcaster, renamed CBC in 1936. Every party leader since then has accepted the validity of CBC & has managed to live with its news reporting, even if they didn't agree with all of its coverage. Why can't PP do the same?
@DonMillsHFX@PierrePoilievre In 1932 Canada's 1st public broadcaster, CRBC (renamed CBC, 1936) was created by Conservative PM R.B.Bennett to assure Cdn control of broadcasting
so "national consciousness may be fostered and sustained and national unity still further strengthened." A Tory policy & still good.
@DonMillsHFX@PierrePoilievre In what world is it breaking news that CBC, the public broadcaster, is supported by public funds? That has always been the case, under both Liberal and Conservative governments. All political leaders have lived with public funding since 1936. Why can't PP?
@ForanKen Ken, I wonder which sort of 'fulsome audit' PP is hoping to see launched. Is it an "excessively flattering" audit? Or an "abundant" audit? I don't think you will find either mentioned in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles or perhaps ever before in the English language.
@DonMillsHFX Interesting idea, Don. Perhaps this could be combined with an effort by governments to release/assemble appropriate Crown land in easily-serviced areas to enable more people to build a modest (perhaps modular) homes. This would bring something more than jawboning to the table.
@DonMillsHFX Not a question likely to elicit much useful information. What does it actually mean? Has Canada ceased to function as a nation? Are masses of Canadians leaving for a country they believe is not broken? Would they anticipate being better off and less angry somewhere else?
@RookwoodEditing @dartmouthredeye Everyone needs an editor. None more than those who think they don't. At a most basic level, do you really want no one to check for mistakes in your mother's obituary, your daughter's wedding announcement,
notice of your son's birth, a speech you are giving, with press present?
@CTVNews Very silly. The mere presence of cake has no impact at all. There is no second-hand cake phenomenon. You would have to eat it yourself. Even then, cake does not cause cancer. Nor obesity, if you eat moderately. Silly stuff does get shovelled out under the cliche of "a new study."
