1/ One of Hale’s friends and fellow classmates at Yale was Benjamin Tallmadge, who joined the Continental Army in June 1776. The war was personal for Tallmadge—his older brother was captured in battle and starved to death on a British prison ship that same summer.

🧵 1/ Where better to start than Nathan Hale, who graduated from Yale College in 1773 at the age of eighteen. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, he joined first the Connecticut militia and then Knowlton’s Rangers, a reconnaissance unit in the Continental Army.
