For decades, the global technology story largely ran in one direction: Western companies invented, Asian manufacturers produced.
That picture is changing fast.

One of the most interesting signals is coming from the world of intellectual property. Chinese technology companies are increasingly licensing their patents and technology to major Western businesses.

Huawei’s new global patent cross-licensing agreement with HP is a good example. Huawei has also reached licensing agreements with companies including Amazon and Ericsson.

The trend stretches well beyond telecoms.

Ford is building a battery operation in Michigan using technology licensed from China’s CATL, one of the world’s most important battery innovators. DJI has licensed technology connected to its enterprise drones to US-based Anzu Robotics.

This matters because patents tell us something that manufacturing statistics alone cannot.

They show us where valuable technology is being created, who owns it, and who has the bargaining power to license it to others.

China’s position has changed significantly. According to World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, its intellectual property office received around 1.8 million patent applications in 2024, almost half of the global total. In 2025, China also led the world in international patent applications filed through WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty system.

Western companies remain hugely important sources of innovation. What we are seeing is a more geographically distributed innovation economy, with intellectual property increasingly flowing in several directions.

For business leaders, that has big implications for partnerships, supply chains, competitive strategy and where we look for the next generation of breakthrough technologies.

Forget crypto for a moment.

Imagine three companies working on the same supply chain. Each keeps its own records, so they spend time checking which version is correct.

With blockchain, they can share a record of what happened. Each update follows agreed rules, and previous entries are difficult to change without the others noticing.

A product can carry a shared history as it moves between companies.

A digital credential can be issued by one organization and verified by another.

A smart contract can trigger an action when a defined condition is met.

Crypto uses the same technology to record and transfer digital value. It is one application, not the definition of blockchain.

The question is: do several parties need to share and verify the same record without giving one of them control?

If yes, blockchain may be worth considering.
