For 22 months, Dr Kizza Besigye has been behind the walls of Luzira Prison.

For nearly three decades, he has paid a heavy price for standing for freedom, justice and democracy in Uganda - arrested countless times, detained, brutalised and prosecuted, without a single criminal conviction.

Now his health is failing.

He collapsed in court. Yet bail has repeatedly been denied. His trial continues while he is unwell and unable to participate fully in his defence.

His legal team has been broken up: team leader @MarthaKarua barred from Uganda, another forced into exile, and his Deputy lead lawyer, former Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, @EriasLukwago_ himself now in prison instead of hospital of choice per medical team opinion.

They (Government) have taken Besigye’s freedom.

We (the people) will not stand by as prison takes his health and dignity too.

And we stand with those imprisoned alongside him, and those paying a price for defending him.

OUR GOAL: UGX 100 MILLION

We are raising UGX 100,000,000 for Dr Besigye’s welfare and care in detention, and to ease the enormous burden that prolonged imprisonment places on those caring for him.

This is not a legal fund. It is a human solidarity fund.

When Dr Kizza Besigye arrived in Nairobi in November 2024, he was a veteran Ugandan opposition leader, physician and four-time presidential candidate.
He had come to Kenya for a book launch but little did he know he would leave as a prisoner.
Nearly two years later, the 70-year-old politician is still incarcerated while battling for his life because of ill health and Kenya is largely to blame for his predicament. He recently collapsed in court, was admitted to hospital and suddenly returned to prison.

We have learnt of the violent abduction, this evening of our brother Mayega Ronald aka Munyarwanda Wa Bobi and another - a media personality commonly known as One One Ug Media. Onlookers say that Mayega was badly beaten before being driven off in a drone. If they are suspected of committing any offence, our demand is that they're produced before a competent court within the time prescribed by law! In the meantime, they should be accessed by their next of kin, lawyers and medical personnel of their choice as guaranteed by law. We hope they won't be held incommunicado as has happened to so many others.

Yesterday, August 30, marked the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, designated by the @UN General Assembly in 2010 to raise global awareness about enforced disappearance and the rights of victims and their families.
An enforced disappearance occurs when a person is arrested, detained or otherwise deprived of their liberty by state agents, or by persons acting with the authorisation, support or acquiescence of the state, followed by a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of liberty or by concealment of the person’s fate or whereabouts. It removes people from the protection of the law and leaves families in a painful state of uncertainty, often without knowing whether their loved one is alive, where they are being held or what has happened to them.
In Uganda, AGORA has documented cases of enforced disappearance involving people abducted or taken into custody and subsequently denied access to their families, lawyers or the courts. We have followed cases, recorded detention histories, sought information on people’s whereabouts and amplified the demands of families seeking truth, justice and accountability.
Every person has the right to liberty and security, to due process and to the protection of the law. Families have the right to know the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones. Enforced disappearance must not become a way of making people disappear from public view and accountability.
As we mark this day, we remember every person who has been subjected to enforced disappearance and stand with the families who continue to demand answers. Where are they? What happened to them? Who is responsible? These questions deserve answers, and the search for the truth must continue.

What won’t Ugandans get killed for at this rate??! They will be killed for daring to hold political views or to participate in their country’s electoral processes, now even for sweeping!! At the first mandatory cleaning exercise when nothing was done about the brutalizing of a young man that was caught on camera, @PoliceUg officers thought since that was okay even shooting and killing is okay. Apart from the police statement I saw (which is very different from statements from eye witnesses and family), has government said anything else about that senseless murder? Has @R_Nabbanja come out to address this? Has police apprehended its officers that committed this crime??

On August 30, former Kampala Lord Mayor and @PFFUganda Executive Chairman @EriasLukwago_ was transferred from Murchison Bay Prison after his health seriously deteriorated.
The PFF announced that Lukwago had been urgently taken from the prison to a medical facility. A family member later told AGORA that he had been transferred to the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) clinic for treatment.
The emergency follows months of documented concerns about Lukwago’s health in custody. Specialists at Mulago National Referral Hospital identified several medical conditions, including a spinal condition requiring specialised treatment. Lukwago told the court that doctors had recommended treatment in India. His lawyers partly sought bail to enable him to access that treatment, but the High Court dismissed his application on July 30, ruling that the medical evidence presented had not been certified by a prison medical officer.
Lukwago remains on remand, facing a charge of misprision of treason, which he denies. He was committed to the High Court for trial on July 16.
His transfer came days after @kizzabesigye1 was moved from Luzira Maximum Security Prison to the same facility following a serious deterioration in his health.
AGORA calls for Lukwago to receive immediate and unrestricted access to the specialised medical care his condition requires. His family and lawyers must also be promptly informed of his medical condition and whereabouts.
