If { I }…say that Abu al-Yaqzan passed on a tradition to us, he is truly Abu al-Yaqzan. But if { I }…say Suhaym ibn Hafs, or Amir ibn Hafs, or Amir ibn Abi Muhammad, or { Amir ibn al-Aswad (the Black), or Suhaym ibn Al-Aswad { The Black } , it is also Abu al-Yaqzan.
قال المدائني فإذا قلت حدثنا أبو اليقظان فهو أبو اليقظان وإذا قلت سحيم بن حفص وعامر بن حفص وعامر بن أبي محمد { وعامر بن الأسود وسحيم بن الأسود } وعبيد الله بن حفص...وأبو إسحاق فهو أبو اليقظان
أبو اليقظان هو سحيم بن حفص وسحيم لقب واسمه عامر بن حفص وكان لحفص ابن يقال له محمد وكان أكبر ولده
Abu al-Yaqzan was Suhaym ibn Hafs, Suhaym being a nickname, as his true name was Amir ibn Hafs. Hafs had a son named Muhammad, who was his eldest child.
حكى الحسين بن فهم عن الدمشقي قال قال الزبير قال المدائني
It was reported by al-Husayn ibn Fahm from al-Dimashqi that al-Zubayr quoted al-Madaini as saying:
