@Vegas82@JenResistedAGN No, read the whole context. Do you know what Corbin was?
He’s complaining about the Pharisees reinterpreting God’s laws for their own benefit.
You dont’t know anyone doing that these days do you? 🙂
@Vegas82@JenResistedAGN Yes.
He's complaining here that Pharisees softened the commandments that were too difficult for them to fulfill & who added meaningless rules that were easy for them to fulfill (& difficult for others). They could pretend they were so pious & Jesus shot them down.
@Vegas82@JenResistedAGN Thank you.
I agree beating another person is evil. Israel had limits on beating slaves. And Jesus took it further & explained the 5th commandment applies if you're mistreating him by beating him.
Do you want to discuss more about those limits, why they existed? A caveat: I'm…
@Vegas82@JenResistedAGN ??
Okay, you can't covet anything of your neighbors, including what's translated as slaves.
But go back to my question. What treatment of slaves is evil that Jesus doesn't call a sin?
@Vegas82@JenResistedAGN Those are the eternal laws … the 10 commandments. See the Sermon on the Mount. The civil laws given specifically to 12th Century BC Israel and the ceremonial laws that became unnecessary after Jesus conquered death aren't eternal.
@Vegas82@JenResistedAGN You don't think he opposed slavery?
Maybe not the "word," or at least all of translations … but let me ask you which actions in slavery are evil and not called sin by the 10 commandments? Theft, assault, rape? Jesus calls all those sins.
@UgoCannon@_Ochiedike I asked … what translation did you find that says "no one has seen God." All the translations I found say "Father" which is not the same as Jesus. Christians believe Jesus is God; He says He's God.
If you complain about Christian then you'll have to use Christian definitions.
@JenResistedAGN If I moved the goalposts it wasn’t intentional.
I’ve always said there was a time when no other institution other than the Christian Church opposed slavery. I.e. all other groups tolerated/accepted it.
I was thinking that working to abolish it shows you aren’t tolerating it.
@UgoCannon gospel writers have reason to lie? They got no girls, riches, or power from their testimony… only torture & death.
And, no, I'm not convinced by any later "miracles," not even those in my family
@UgoCannon The Mormons who testified for Smith got rich off of it, so there’s at least reason to be skeptical.
I don’t know anything about witnesses for M’s miracles so I can’t evaluate them. Tell me more. And I didn’t think we have witnesses regarding the founding of Hinduism.
Did the…
@UgoCannon We've had this exchange before.
What can we know about what people did or said in the history unless it was recorded somewhere? Are you going to reject anything in history because there's no audio or video of it?
We evaluate the witnesses. Did they have reason to lie?
@JenResistedAGN time. (And now 3000 years later there are those who complain that He judged & destroyed that civilization. Are you so anxious for the end of the world, which is when He has promised to eliminate sin?)
@JenResistedAGN patient. What I mean… he can destroy all slave-owners (like Epstein) but read His parable of the weeds (Matthew 13). I can imagine His critics complained for 400 years that He was permitting child sacrifice in Canaan & why didn’t He do anything about it yet He gave them …
