Ruhe in Frieden.
I am here to speak the truth. Supergirl is GOOD! The critics are being way too harsh. There’s way more good than bad in this movie, I believe the audiences will rate this higher. Have an open mind and see it for yourself. As a fan of DC, I enjoyed this!! ❤️💙
Thor Love and Thunder - one of the worst comic book films ever made - not even rotten
Black widow - mediocre, decent at best, certified fresh
She hulk - one of the most unwatchable comic book projects in existence - 80%
I love Marvel. But critics watch marvel films through an entirely different lens than they do DC and it’s been obvious for almost 20 years now.
Yeah, all of these reviews coming out hating on this movie are complete bullshit. I genuinely mean this when I say if you are reading reviews saying this is the worst movie ever, it is from people who either watched with their eyes closed and ears plugged, or it's from people who went into it determined to hate it regardless. I was genuinely shocked by how much I enjoyed it. I would watch this again, which is rare for me to admit. Do not let this hate campaign stop you from seeing this movie, guys. It's good. If you want to compare it to Superman, then I'd say that was a great movie, and this was a good one. It could be stronger in some aspects, but character and story-wise, it's solid. 8/10.
Now I'm gonna break down pros and cons with slight spoilers, so scroll away now if you want!!!
Pros:
- Surprise surprise, Milly is phenomenal. She was the perfect choice to play Kara, and Gunn really hit it out of the park casting her and Corenswet. Her acting in this is amazing, and she has so much range in her performance. Kara is incredibly sassy and funny, but also vulnerable when it counts. You're entertained by her from the very beginning, but very quickly you go from finding her amusing to genuinely being invested in her character, which says a lot. It's easy to root for her, and I will 100% be invested in whatever her character is in next.
- There is another actress in this whose performance seriously impressed me. I won't say who the character is because I feel it gives things away, but all I'll say is you'll know who I'm talking about when you see it. Her character is also very likable, and her relationship with Kara is beautifully written.
- The story is GOOD. I know, you rarely hear me say that lol, but it's good. The character's motivations actually make sense, and they are realistic. Kara's character remains consistent from beginning to end, and her motivations for going on this rollercoaster of a story are something I would hope everyone would support. Essentially, she's risking it all to save something she loves, and you are watching her go through so much trauma and grief while also battling this need to find her path in life. I thought her decisions made sense based on the things we know and the information she gives us. She is not Superman, and she definitely doesn't have his mindset. However, she is absolutely still a hero, but she does things in her own way. Her character is very likable, and anyone who is saying this is "girl boss woke slop" is just being a fucking idiot for engagement. There is no "girl power" storyline, and there are no "all men suck" narratives. There is ONE line from another character asking Kara why she's called Supergirl instead of Superwoman if Clark is Superman, but Kara doesn't even answer, lol. That's the only thing I imagine some men will be bitching about. I wasn't bored a single time, and I thought all of the decisions and character reactions made sense. It also 100% feels like a superhero movie. You are very immersed in her world.
- Guys, this story has SO much heart in it. I was not expecting to have my heartstrings pulled so many times. I literally got emotional multiple times lol. This story is not afraid to get dark or talk about real shit everyone can relate to. That's another reason these negative reviews confuse/piss me off: I felt like so much of the story is about navigating grief and the anger you feel when you lose something, which all of us have experienced or will experience at some point. The movie is very real, and the characters are not afraid to be vulnerable. There are several conversations between Kara and Clark that made me tear up. There is another conversation between Kara and her dad that is SO vulnerable and devastating. I was not expecting this tone at all from this movie, and I'm honestly so glad they went this route. It has its fun moments, but I would argue the overall tone is serious.
- THE VILLAINNNN. Guys. The villain is actually good, like well-written. If you were afraid this was gonna have cartoony and lame villains, then let me relieve you of those fears now. This guy is insane. I was SHOCKED by how dark they went with this guy. This guy kills multiple kids on screen, y'all. He's also a literal CHILD TRAFFICKER. It goes into detail about what he's doing with these kids, and again, I was just so shocked by how intense they went. He doesn't have cringey one-liners or this whole "I'm evil because _" moment. He's just a bad person, and he doesn't care about anyone other than himself and his own interests. He is genuinely unnerving and gives you the creeps every time he's on screen. I don't know who the actor was, but he killed it.
- There are SOOOO many aliens and locations we get to see! I was very happy and surprised. You see more aliens than you do people, and every location we go to throughout the movie is unique and FEELS like you're watching a superhero movie. You don't even see Earth beyond a few seconds of Kara looking out the window, and the view is just buildings. I loveeee that they went all-in with the destinations and species.
- Now for the biggest shock of them all....Jason Momoa actually doesn't play himself for once. I know, I too was shocked while watching this lol. Lobo is entertaining and also doesn't look bad at all. I don't know what they did with that trailer to make him look like shit, but guys, he looks great in the movie. Jason even uses a different voice, which I think makes the character even more legit. You can tell he tried very hard to give a good performance.
- Now for the fight scenes! There are so many that I honestly can't count them all. They are all choreographed well, but here's what I really liked. I think in the past, there's been a weird trope where directors are afraid of showing female characters losing or being beaten up in fights, even if they're superheroes. As long as it's not unnecessary violence, I think it's important to keep things realistic for both men and women. There are going to be moments where a punch doesn't land, or you completely lose a fight. This movie is not afraid to have Kara lose or get her ass kicked. She does not just sit and look pretty for the whole movie. She gets down and dirty, and it makes the fights enjoyable. Whoever did the choreography deserves their flowers. There isn't any "well she has to be a girl boss so she can't lose" nonsense. When it makes sense for her to be overpowered, they do it, and I appreciated the realism.
Cons:
- The CGI is bad, like shockingly so. It starts off as okay but not great, which right away surprised me. Not sure what the budget for this was, but I assume it was a big one. The CGI is very inconsistent, and in some scenes, it's just straight-up CW level. There are some moments where it really does give The Flash vibes, and that disappointed me.
- The songs they play don't fit well, in my opinion, and I found them to be annoying. I wish they had just done their own soundtrack throughout instead.
- The start of the movie is a bit awkward, but it quickly fixes itself. I guess I was just expecting a different order for the events, and the pacing isn't always the best to follow. I think it also has to do with the small runtime. I wish it were longer.
- There is a scene towards the end where it seemed like Jason Momoa was almost trying to channel his inner Heath Ledger Joker, and I found it to be super jarring because it did not land at all and also felt random. Lobo is entertaining, but I wouldn't say interesting. It seemed like they were teasing his character more than anything, so they didn't want to give the audience too much info on him, which I think is going to backfire on them. I wouldn't say he's comedic relief, but it's clear they didn't intend for him to be that serious, which I wish they had gone that route instead. Kara is immediately freaked out and cautious when she recognizes him, which makes you think he's about to be this super-intimidating, maybe even bad-guy type, but it cuts to him kinda just being a bit of a goof, in my opinion. Momoa did give a good performance, and as I said, he looks great, but I wish they had maybe gone a different route with him in this.
- The runtime was too short in my opinion. I think the pacing would have improved if the movie were longer. That being said, it didn't feel incomplete or anything like that. If anything, this just means I wanted to see more, which is a good thing. I was genuinely invested in what was happening on screen.
- There are multiple instances where people are killed with weapons, but there's no blood. It was very odd to me because again, considering how dark the villain is and the subject material of his motivations, it's kinda funny to me that blood was where they closed the line lol. So those parts made it seem a bit odd, but the death scenes are all still intense.
And that's really it! I think it says a lot that my cons are really things that have nothing to do with the writing or quality of the characters. It's genuinely a good movie, guys, and I really would recommend seeing it. I didn't even think I'd really like it, but I did, and I will see it again. I loved Milly's performance, and I can now say I am a Supergirl fan. She and David have done a fantastic job. Please do not let these bad reviews fool you. If this flops, I'll genuinely be sad because it isn't a bad movie whatsoever. In my opinion, it deserves to have a successful run just like Superman. Go see it!
