Yesterday’s Martti Ahtisaari Legacy Seminar in Geneva offered an invaluable opportunity to reflect on President Ahtisaari’s impact and the future of mediation and humanitarian diplomacy.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants, speakers, and partners.

Panelists also challenged traditional notions of diplomacy; what matters most is who is at the table, not where peace is negotiated — be it in Beijing, Delhi, Brasília, or the Vatican. What counts is the inclusivity of the process and the sustainability of the outcome.

I had the honour to speak at Martti Ahtisaari Legacy Seminar in Dar es Salaam today.

Africa was very close to Martti Ahtisaari's heart and Tanzania had a special role in his life. Here his career as a mediator began.

In Tanzania, he got friends from the independence movements and understood the principle that he followed throughout his career: only parties of the conflict can make peace. You cannot bring that from the outside.
