@dp_oneill Thread is right on--Both direct and indirect CMS and insurer policies favor larger practices and lead to consolidation. We need more antitrust regulation and physician competition, but also need to address these burdens.
This is a good piece. I would add one more element…
Many clinicians are excited about moving toward value-based care, but CMS and many insurers only permit large groups to participate in the more interesting and lucrative forms of VBC.
Hence: aggregation.
Who owns your doctor’s office? In our op-ed for @thehill, @CM_Whaley and I discuss what’s
driving doctors to sell independent practices to corporate investors like private equity. We offer paths forward.

@djmeyers2 @amal_trivedi @Andy_Ryan_dydx Great recognition for @djmeyers2's fantastic research on understanding the fastest growing area of managed care--Medicare Advantage. Does MA save taxpayers $$, improve care quality, or address access barriers? All critical questions for policy.
So honored to have received this year's Seema Sonad Emerging Leader in Managed Care Research Award! Thank you to all of my mentors and @amal_trivedi and @Andy_Ryan_dydx for nominating me and for your support!

New @nberpubs WP with @agrawal_virat & Neeraj Sood @SchaefferCenter on the global COVID-19 vax campaign. In first few months, 2.4 million lives saved w/ economic benefit of $6.5 trillion. More lives could have been saved with more equitable distribution https://t.co/FoqJflScDv
Hospital prices have risen more than any other product or service across the US economy says Prof @CM_Whaley, due to “increased concentration, better and more expensive technology and insurance coverage that lessens how much patients feel price increases.” https://t.co/mPhXvUDN4W

Employers are responsible for providing health insurance for half the country, but have little insight into prices. Innovative groups like @EmplyrsForumIN use data to push for policy change and be responsible fiduciaries: https://t.co/Ot8hLWQHjx via @WSJ
Yes, this is in fact the job:
Health economists attribute high overall prices and price differences among hospitals to provider market power. They do this by applying assumptions, models, and tools to analyze retrospective data and reach conclusions.
