What’s happening with oil markets?

Oil prices have been on the rise since last week rebounding from nearly $73 (Brent) to above $81 today for the first time since October last year, despite strengthening dollar 💵.

The United States 🇺🇸 has imposed a a set of new sanctions on Russian oil exports hitting two major oil producers, Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz in addition to 183 vessels that have shipped Russian oil that will likely remove one million barrels of oil a day. Since the start of the Russian Ukrainian war, the US has been cautious on takin any measure that can lead disruption in supply of oil from Russia, using alternative measures including price cap that may deter Russia’s to finance its war. Yet these are new measures being taken in the final days on the current administration. The Trump administration is also expected to take a tougher approach towards Iranian oil that is expected to remove at least 300k bpd of Iranian oil exports this year, according to Goldman Sachs.

Combined with that OPEC+ decision December last year, has taken several measures to tighten supply delaying easing of voluntary cuts until April this year, while extending almost 3.67 million bpd till the end of 2026. China 🇨🇳 this year is targeting 5% growth and it’s taking various measures to stimulate the economy including raising the debt ceiling that is likely to support global demand this year, expected to be between 1-1.4 million bpd.

We also see OPEC+ exports decreasing suggesting better adherence from its members towards their quotas.

In a recent interview with @BloombergTV , I had pointed out that prices are likely to be in the $80 range and this is what we are seeing now which reflects that 2025 may look different compared to the previous year in terms of supply demand dynamics.
