RAPP-8 Achieves Major Milestone with Commencement of Initial Fuel Loading
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) achieved a significant milestone with the commencement of Initial Fuel Loading (IFL) at Unit-8 of Rajasthan Atomic Power Project 7&8 (RAPP-7&8, 2x700 MWe) at Rawatbhata, Rajasthan.
The Initial Fuel Loading commenced at 15:18 hrs on September 19, 2026 in the presence of Shri S. D. Paraswar, Director (Operations); Shri N. K. Mitharwal, Director (Projects); Shri D. S. Rao, Site Director, Rawatbhata Rajasthan Site along with the Station Directors.
It is a major milestone in the construction and commissioning journey of a nuclear power reactor. The commencement of IFL at RAPP-8 followed the receipt of permission from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and completion of all prescribed pre-requisites. The permission was granted following rigorous safety evaluations, major system integrity audits and site readiness reviews conducted as part of the regulatory process.
RAPP-7&8 comprises of two indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). With the commencement of IFL, Unit-8 has entered an important stage of its commissioning journey. The next major steps will include the First Approach to Criticality (FAC), marking the start of controlled fission chain reaction, followed by the commencement of power generation. The unit is expected to commence commercial operation during the current financial year.
RAPP-8 is the fourth reactor in the series of sixteen indigenous 700 MWe PHWRs being set up in the country. The first two reactors in this series, KAPS-3 and KAPS-4 at Kakrapar, Gujarat, commenced commercial operation in 2023-24, followed by RAPP-7 in April 2025. These indigenous reactors incorporate advanced safety features.
The commencement of Initial Fuel Loading at the fourth indigenous PHWR-700 MWe represents an important achievement for NPCIL and various constituent units of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). It further strengthens the standardisation of the 700 MWe PHWR reactor design and supports its continued deployment in fleet mode. The milestone has been achieved with adherence to all applicable safety guidelines and AERB stipulations.
The progress at RAPP-8 reflects the continued advancement of India’s indigenous nuclear power programme and NPCIL’s commitment to the safe, clean, reliable and sustained generation of nuclear power based electricity.
About NPCIL:
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), a Government of India Enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy, is engaged in the design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of nuclear power reactors for the generation of clean electricity besides technology development. NPCIL operates 24 nuclear power reactors totalling to a capacity of 8.78 GWe and has 17 nuclear power reactors (totalling to about 13 GWe) under various stages of implementation.
In addition, more reactors are planned as NPCIL aims to contribute over 50% of the 100 GWe nuclear power capacity envisaged by the Government by 2047.
NPCIL is committed to safe, clean, reliable and sustainable nuclear power generation, with a focus on operational excellence and technological advancement.

A New Milestone in India's Nuclear Power Journey
Kaiga Generating Station, Unit–1 (KGS-1) has achieved a significant milestone in the life cycle of a Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) with the loading of its first new fuel bundle on 13 September 2026, marking the completion of the En-Mass Coolant Channel Replacement (EMCCR) and En-Mass Feeder Replacement (EMFR) programme and the beginning of restart activities.
KGS-1 achieved this milestone in the shortest time among NPCIL units that have undergone EMCCR & EMFR. After over 25 years of safe operation and supplying about 37,670 Million Units of electricity to the grid, KGS-1 was shut down on 1 April 2025 for taking up these major activities.
The EMCCR programme involved a series of highly specialised activities, including defueling, heavy-water draining, removal and replacement of coolant channels, in-core inspections, installation and inspection of new coolant channels, fresh-fuel loading, leak testing, heavy-water filling, hydrotesting, hot conditioning and approach to reactor criticality. Each stage was carried out under rigorous safety oversight. The successful completion of this complex engineering programme represents a major milestone in the life cycle of a PHWR, strengthening the foundation for continued safe and reliable generation of clean electricity.

As a Telugu person, It's amazing how you can read Kannada but understand nothing they speak. On the contrary, You can make out what is spoken in Tamil but cannot read anything written. Then there is Malayalam.
Jinks, congratulations on a great career, buddy. You’ve done wonders for Indian cricket, and you can be very proud of your journey. The safest pair of hands in the slips and my favourite Test batting partner. Wishing you well always. God bless. 🤝🇮🇳

Reliability in Action. Excellence in Every Milestone.
Kakrapar Atomic Power Station, Unit-2 (KAPS-2) has once again demonstrated the hallmark of operational excellence by successfully completing 365 days of continuous reactor operation on 21 July 2026, followed by its planned Biennial Shutdown.
During this period, the unit generated about 1,950 Million Units (MUs) of clean electricity while operating at rated power, a reflection of robust plant performance, meticulous maintenance practices and the steadfast commitment of Team NPCIL.
This latest milestone adds another distinguished chapter to KAPS-2’s remarkable legacy. The unit continues to hold the record for the longest continuous operating run (647 days) among all KAPS units since commercial operation. It has also achieved continuous operation exceeding 400 days on two occasions and over 300 days on another occasion, consistently setting benchmarks in operational reliability.
With this achievement, NPCIL reactors have achieved continuous reliable and safe reactor operation of 365 days or more on 56 occasions, reflecting the strength of NPCIL’s safety-first culture, engineering excellence, operational discipline and the dedication of its highly skilled workforce.
Every milestone of sustained operation strengthens India’s energy security, advances the nation’s clean energy transition and reaffirms nuclear power as a dependable source of round-the-clock, low-carbon electricity for a Viksit Bharat.
