Ben McCollum won 4 national titles at Northwest Missouri State.
His biggest lesson came before any of them.
Day one, first practice, he walks in and thinks:
"This is what first place feels like."
Not on the scoreboard. In the room.
First-place people work hard — but it's more than that. There's an edge.
And there's energy.
The guys who didn't make it weren't bad kids. They were just moody. Flat. They took life out of the building.
Culture isn't built by talent.
It's built by people who bring work, edge, and energy every day.
First-place people don't just perform.
They raise the room.

PICK AND ROLL 🤝 DETAILS
1. SCREEN ANGLES. Angle influences coverage. Flat angle for guard to guard to prevent switch. Low side forcing over 1-5 to create a 2 on 1 (low side angle). Square angle means your wanting a switch.
2. SPRINT TO SCREEN. Puts the screeners defender out of position when they attempt to neutralize advantage with coverage.
3. RACE-READ-RACE. . Changing the pace of the screen allows decision making to occur + keeps the defense guessing. One speed is easy to guard (whether fast or slow).
4. SHIN ANGLES. Ball handler must use a sprinters stance to get vertical. Amateur/low level players move horizontally at the first sign of resistance. Elite players get vertical using a sprinters stance or SHOW vertical if the coverage neutralizes the advantage.
5. POCKET PASS. One handed bounce vs leaving the ground to pass or attempting to go over top of the D.
6. PASSING ANGLES. Great PGs understand where the seal or rim run is and what angle to use (or to pass to another player) for a better angle.
7. AIM TO MISS. If the ball handler has an advantage before the screen then ‘aim to miss’ no need to create an advantage for one that is there. Speed up the 2 on 1.
8. LOW MAN/TAGGER. Ball handlers eventually feel the POA coverage look to the second level. If the tagger is early, the skip or dunkers spot is open, if they are late then it’s the 2 on 1.
9. 0.5 DECISION MAKING. Probably the biggest mistake ball handlers make is holding on to the ball in a neutral spot for too long or turn nothing into something. This should only occur in EOG/EOC spots. Move the ball.
10. SPACING. Understand what an angle PnR vs a Spread ball screen is. Stretch the help, and at higher levels remove the low man with player movement via exit screen, Spain, wide pin, etc.

The Wings defeat the Sparks to get their BEST franchise start in 18 years (17-8) 🤯
Dallas has now won its sixth-straight game for the first time since relocating in 2016 👏
Was fortunate to coach the most all defensive players over a 9-year run, including some of the best guard defenders in league history (J Thomas, B January, J Canada). But what @azzi_35 is doing defensively as a rookie is ELITE! 👊
