The coaching takeaway:
Not every defensive breakdown requires a recovery.
Sometimes the best way to fix a blown assignment is to exchange it.
HELP. PEEL. SWITCH.
A simple concept worth adding to your defensive system.
The key is teaching three habits:
→ HELP early to stop penetration.
→ PEEL immediately when help takes the ball.
→ COMMUNICATE the switch.
The beaten defender can't hesitate or keep chasing.
In 1991, Bill Belichick walked into a defensive meeting before the Super Bowl with a surprising plan.
He was willing to let Buffalo's best running back gain 100 yards.
Why would he do that?
Mike Leach intentionally created HUGE holes in his offensive line.
His linemen would align with unusually wide splits.
It looked dangerous.
There was a method to it. ⬇️
That was the beauty of Leach's wide splits.
Most coaches looked at open space between offensive linemen and saw vulnerability.
Leach saw distance.
And distance bought his quarterback time.

Widen the offensive line…
and the defensive front had to widen with it.
Now an edge rusher's path to the QB became longer.
Interior rushers had more space to cover.
Stunts took longer to develop.
And the QB could see pressure coming.
That’s high-level coaching.
Ben Johnson didn’t necessarily simplify the offense.
He simplified how players accessed the offense.
There’s a massive difference between:
Dumbing it down vs. cleaning it up.
But that one word still had to tell:
→ WRs where to align
→ OL the protection
→ RBs the action
→ QB the read
And they could still motion, shift, kill the play or adjust the formation.
The wild part?
They could carry up to 10 of these one-word calls in a week.
What did Pat Summitt understand about rebounding that most coaches overlook?
Her approach emphasized six fundamentals:
1. Make contact.
2. Establish inside position.
3. Anticipate missed shots.
4. Rebound with two hands.
5. Finish the possession.
6. Turn rebounds into transition.
Rebounding isn't just effort. It's a skill that must be taught.
