A study of childhood cancer cases treated at Windhoek Central Hospital recorded 174 cases between 2011 and 2020, with nearly 60% involving children aged five and younger.
Nephroblastoma, the kidney cancer affecting four-year-old Brunice Dickson, accounted for 16.7% of the recorded cases.
For Brunice’s family, however, these statistics have become a painful reality. The four-year-old was diagnosed with nephroblastoma in July 2025 and underwent chemotherapy before doctors removed one of her kidneys.
After months of treatment, her family celebrated when she was declared cancer-free in July this year.
But their relief was short-lived.
Doctors have now discovered that the cancer has returned and spread to her liver, leaving Brunice in need of further specialised treatment.
The first five days of treatment are expected to cost about N$9,000, with additional treatment depending on how she responds.
Her parents do not have medical aid and are now appealing to members of the public for financial assistance.

The Namibia-Cuba Solidarity Campaign has raised approximately N$1.7 million, including medical supplies worth more than N$506,000, but needs another 1.3 million to purchase solar energy kits for Cuban health centers.
Campaign Chairperson Helmuth Angula is urging Namibians to contribute, citing Cuba’s support for Namibia during the liberation struggle.
The government solidarity dinner is underway in Windhoek, in light of the escalating socio-economic difficulties linked to the stringent US sanctions imposed on the island nation.
“Again, Cuba is not alone. The people of Namibia are with you... Donate now." Angula said.

A resident of Okuryangava, Windhoek Desire Katupose, spent her Monday evening pacing the corridors of Katutura Intermediate Hospital.
Katupose is in search of missing eldest brother who vanished over a month and two weeks ago.
She moved from the basement all the way up to the 7th floor, checking ward by ward, bed by bed in the desperate hope of finding 47-year-old Engelhart Katupose lying unidentified or unconscious on a hospital bed.
Engelhart Katupose went missing on 30 July 2026, and his family has had no leads since, apart from the one today from a Kaisames listener who heard an announcement of a unidetified patient at Katutura hospital, sparking the search.
She is still clinging to hope, for her brother to reunite with the family and more especially his 14-year-old daughter after an exhausting after-work search that yielded no positive results.
The family is appealing to the Windhoek community and Namibian nation who spotted Katupose in the last few weeks to contact sister Desire Katupose on number in poster or nearest police.

A veteran of the liberation struggle, Tomas Ausiku, better known by his combat name Omukukutu Wambekele, hails from Okafitu-Kakuni in the Outapi Constituency of the Omusati Region. He shared his experiences of war and his reflections on what Heroes’ Day signifies for him with the NBC News team.
Ausiku joined the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) at a young age, in his early twenties. He was part of the 8th Battalion and says he was one of the founding members who helped establish the battalion in the early 1980s while in exile.
He described his first battle, which took place on 4 May 1978 at Omufitu Washilambo in Angola, as not an easy fight, as they had to fight by all means to ensure they defeated the enemy.
This battle, he said, was intense and painful, and it cost them 12 soldiers who were killed during the confrontation. He said he was trained by men well known by their war names, Shindjiwu Shanangula and Kafinana, from Oukwanyama.
After independence, Ausiku joined the NDF in 1995 and retired as a staff sergeant in 2018. He now lives in his home, which he describes as being in a peaceful and free Namibia, compared to how it was before.
He says Heroes’ Day is an important day, as it makes him feel like a war hero for this country. He urged the youth to respect the day, maintain the peace, and not sell the country.
