If you have nothing kind to say, saying nothing at all really is the better option.
Some fans get so caught up in “defending” and “protecting” their favorite artists that they end up doing far more harm than good. You’re not protecting them by attacking their friends, coworkers, staff, other artists, or random people online. Most of the time, you’re just creating unnecessary drama and putting the very person you claim to protect in an uncomfortable position.
Being a fan is supposed to be FUN. Post the cute moments. Make memes. Hype their work. Share things that make people smile. And if being in a fandom constantly makes you angry, suspicious, defensive, or miserable, maybe it’s time to take a break from social media for a while.
And please stop reading hidden meanings and malicious intentions into absolutely everything. We only see tiny, carefully selected parts of these artists’ lives. No matter how much they share online, how long you’ve supported them, how many events you’ve attended, or how much money you’ve spent on them, we are not their friends, family, or coworkers. We do not know them personally.
Supporting someone doesn’t give us ownership over their relationships or the right to fight battles they never asked us to fight.
Sometimes the most respectful thing you can do as a fan is simply enjoy what they choose to share, support their work, and know when to let things go. 🤟🏼
