'Buying more social care beds to get patients out of hospital more quickly is only part of the answer.
The other vital part is to invest in the workforce for community rehabilitation services, many of which have borne the brunt of years of de-prioritising and funding cuts. Community healthcare gives people their lives back, enables them to fully recover, manage their symptoms and live independently. They also greatly improve the flow through hospital and prevent people from needing to be readmitted further down the line.
Rehabilitation is the lifeblood that runs through all areas of the NHS and when it is properly funded and resourced it speeds up patient discharge and boosts patient outcomes.
It is crucial for the next government to recognise just how essential physiotherapy and rehab teams in hospitals and in the community are to ensure a healthy future for the NHS. We know that if these services are given sufficient staff, space and equipment, huge change is possible.'
