At our last meeting, we heard from Jess Casot from Ukraine is Europe, speaking on the resettlement of internally displaced Ukrainians, and the organisation’s model for post-war reintegration.
As Jess Casot said:
“Whilst making sure those Ukrainians who wish to stay [in Scotland] are given every opportunity to do so, we also need to make sure that there is infrastructure for those who want to return.”
Last month we heard from Argyll & Bute Council and the @UofGlasgow about Ukrainian resettlement in the area. Argyll & Bute now has a thriving Ukrainian community, supported by the Council’s Resettlement Team and its own Ukrainian Community organisation. #ScotlandandUkraine
At last week's Cross Party meeting, we heard from Diletta Lauro from the British Red Cross.
She spoke on the report the composed three years after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine caused mass displacement of Ukrainians to the UK.
Whilst 75% of those surveyed were in employment, many have found the inability to transfer Ukrainian job qualifications to be a barrier to securing skilled work.
Uncertainty under the current visa scheme was also creating barriers to employment and to securing long-term housing.
A Scotland-based community practitioner, Maryna Zvarych brings a practical, lived perspective on integration to the #CPGonUkraine. Through her community work and the MARFA project, she demonstrates how culture and food can build trust and connection between Scotland and Ukraine.
Meet Anna Makhlay, a longstanding member of the CPG on Ukraine. Through her work with the @JohnSmithTrust , she has led Scotland-Ukraine programmes supporting leadership, recovery, innovation, and green transition – turning solidarity into practical cooperation.
Work in London prevents me physically being at #CrossPartyGrouponUkraine. As we approach the 4 Yr anniversary of the full scale invasion we're hearing about the integration lessons learned. It's clear that as time goes on, our "New Scots" are becoming deeply integrated here
In November, the Cross-Party Group on Ukraine heard from Dr Giles Sutherland, who shared his experience of working and teaching within Ukrainian academic and cultural institutions.
His work places particular emphasis on the importance of culture in times of war.
He self-funds his visits to Ukraine, where he works to strengthen academic and cultural ties between Ukraine and Scotland.
He has expressed his ambition to establish a Centre of Scottish Studies in Ukraine, further deepening collaboration between the two nations.
We’re pleased to welcome Yuliia Ismail to the Cross-Party Group on Ukraine. A Ukrainian advocate and SRA-registered foreign lawyer, Yuliia leads Settled’s Ukraine advice work and has been instrumental in advancing family reunion rights for Ukrainians in the UK.
