Jack Viney arrived at Melbourne in its darkest season.
He leaves after 238 games, two Blueys and the premiership the club spent 57 years chasing.
The trade can explain his age, his body and where he fits in the reset. It can't price what he meant to @melbournefc.
I went back through the full career of a father-son who helped drag this club from the bottom to the flag.
Jack Viney was Melbourne before Melbourne became good again.

Many of you have been tracking the Irkutsk lab situation over the last few days.
I've been gathering facts and trying to understand what is happening before weighing in.
Now that I have, I have to say — I'm concerned

A six year old does not deserve to be in poverty. Full stop.
Every kid in poverty is a policy failure. But since kids don't have separate incomes, you can't help the kid without helping the household they're in. That's the whole political tension. https://t.co/gvM09uKSsd
Extraordinary journalism from @NewYorker, on Jared Kushner's catastrophic diplomacy, conflicts of interest, arrogance. He represents "a new kind of Washington figure, for whom public office serves as a means to extraordinary wealth"

My biggest gripe with the AFL reducing quarter length is when they point to sports around the world being successful at doing the same... like the MLB.
Every time they say that, do they not realise that the MLB reduced game time by reducing dead time... not the actual play time. They didn't remove an innings, or an out, they stopped dead time.
Fans are okay with removing wasted time, but removing actual play time, especially when every way to watch the game is becoming more and more expensive is wild...
1. Stop introducing rule changes that increase scoring and proudly take credit then complain that game length is too long, each goal adds time for commercial breaks.
2. Umpire to throw the ball up instantly at stoppages with no ruck nominations, free kick against if 2 players contest ruck for the same team.
3. Boundary umpire to throw the ball in and not wait until all players are set.
4. Remove boundary reviews, last disposal is last disposal and should not be for inadvertent deflections, umpires can still pay insufficient intent free kicks.
5. Stop calling for score reviews over behind posts, umpires call always.
6. Do not introduce any more technology that will add more reviews and slow the game down (eg. Greg Swann on potential technology that determines kick to mark distance).
7. Listen to the fans.
Permanently shortening quarters in the AFL would be nothing less than vandalism of the game of Australian rules football. No fan wants this, and surely the broadcasters don’t, either. Bin the idea and start again

Embla or Gimlet for dinner.
Herald Sun columnists gotta be in absolute shambles with overseas visitors (espcially well-followed members of the press) showing off and GLOWING about the vibrant beauty of Melbourne, and the spots to eat, drink, and walk through.
A true legend of the sport. 🏀
