BREAKING: A bill will be introduced in Westminster to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales.
Similar to the Isle of Man, this will be a long process but a significant first step across the water.

"We the Chagossians are completely against this handover treaty, we have not been consulted and Mauritius is untrustworthy of this deal."

This has been disgracefully announced when Parliament is not sitting. Those of us who care about the British overseas territories- all of them- will be pursuing this appalling lack of accountability.
Capitulation of the British Indian Ocean Territory and betrayal of self-determination to the British Chagossians will make other Overseas Territories like Gibraltar and the Falklands uneasy with the UK.
As Defence Secretary I was so concerned about the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands that I blocked the deal from proceeding. Today, this government has announced it's abandoned our sovereignty of the Archipelago, including the militarily essential Diego Garcia.
The government's joint statement fails to address FOUR urgent questions:
1. What happens after 99 years and specifically, is renewal then automatic? If not, then Starmer has just signed up to a Hong Kong style situation, which hasn't worked out well.
2. Exactly how much is the new rental payment to the government of Mauritius? The sums being demanded were both enormous and indexed linked. The government must release this number immediately.
3. How has the government ensured continued military use of Diego Garcia, especially since the location of these islands could be impacted by the Treaty of Pelindaba (also known as the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treat).
4. How will this capitulation help when it comes to protecting other British assets like Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands and our two Sovereign Bases in Cyprus - all of which face varying levels of sovereignty challenge?
How can the FCDO hand over 🇮🇴 and spin it into a positive? They have:
✅ Betrayed self-determination of Chagossians.
✅ Agreed to pay 🇲🇺 billions of £ for the next 99 yrs to use our island.
✅ Compromised international security.
✅ Devalued 🇬🇧 standing in the world.
Today's surrender by Labour puts at risk the BIOT Chagos Marine Protected Area; one of the worlds largest.
🐠 It includes the Great Chagos Bank, the world's largest coral atoll, as well as shallow reefs, deep-sea plains, limestone platforms, sea mounts, and deep sea-knolls.
🎣 Mauritius opposed this marine protection status, claiming their rights to fish it.
☮️They lack the navy to protect quarter of a million square miles of ocean....located over 1,000 miles away from Mauritius itself.
The handover of the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius is shameful news. The Chagossians did not want this and the British public did not want this. This is a betrayal of regional security, self-determination and sovereignty of a territory which is legally British.
Absolute pleasure to attend a conference today with @FatimaWh1tbread as guest speaker. A hero of mine when I was young and reinforced today from listening to her inspirational life story.
"The Isle of Man has one of the world’s cutest problems. And no one knows how to deal with it."

Today, on this day 200 years ago, 4th March 1824, The Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded.
I was delighted to be on Douglas promenade to mark the occasion.
A stunning display of the Northern Lights... from the ISLE OF MAN!
For many, seeing the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis) is a bucket list activity and destinations such as Norway, Iceland and Finland are usually top of mind.
However, the Isle of Man has some of the lowest light pollution in the British Isles, and officially the highest concentration of dark sky sites, meaning our skies are ideal for such beautiful displays✨⭐️✨⭐️
With domestic holidays and 'destination dupes' on the rise, we can attest that the Isle of Man is well equipped to meet your holiday needs!
Rich in unique culture, history and heritage, with fascinating stories of legends and folklore, a thriving food scene and extraordinary landscapes to rival those of Iceland (just look at the images below), consider experiencing some Island magic for your next holiday.
