Under the imminent legislation, New Zealand entities with income over $20 million p.a. must submit annual reports of the risk of labour abuse in their supply chains. A public register of the disclosure statements will be established, and a penalty regime implemented.
The New Zealand Government has today announced it is drafting modern slavery legislation. This is a significant milestone for New Zealand, which aligns us with other countries (e.g., Australia and the UK).
However, disclosure legislation is just one step in our efforts, and considerable work remains to tackle modern slavery in supply chains. The introduction of due diligence legislation is a crucial next step.
I warmly welcome the announcement by the govt today of the proposed new disclosure legislation to help assess and address the risks of modern slavery and worker exploitation in Aotearoa NZ and globally.
What does this mean for us?

“INZ seem to take the view that [paying premiums] eliminates them as being a victim, as if the migrant worker has somehow contributed to their exploitation. In my view, the duress they are under to pay that money is in itself a form of exploitation.”
