Night Hawk - Magee Marsh - Lifer, and one of the 2 birds I wanted to see the most on this trek, was super cool to see it. This was the first bird I spotted there thanks to other folks pointing it out.
This Isn't the Vine For Me
What if barred owls didn't have tail feathers?
This one has them, but at least shows us how goofy they can look without them :D
"Stick 'em with the pointy end"
I wouldn't want to be on the business side of those talons - whatever she got it was pretty stylish. Special thanks to the photobombing log.

The Hunterβs Reward
Barred Owls feed each other as part of their pair bonding β they mate for life. With this shrewβs fate sealed as a gift for his mate, I watched him deliver the prize straight to her.

The Hunterβs Prize
Their asymmetrical ears create a living 3D sound map, working in perfect sync with exceptional night vision. Even in pitch black, this shrewβs fate was sealed the moment the owl locked on.

I found this barred owl on a tree shaped like half of a "Y". He took the unoccupied line and made himself look like a nub sticking off the tree. If he wasn't pointed out by someone else for me I'd never have found him (this time) :P

Brown-headed cowbird (male). The females lay eggs in other birds nests usually damaging or removing one egg to replace, the babies incubate and fledge faster than most other birds. Female cowbirds will monitor nests they have parasitized. If their eggs are removed, they may destroy the host's eggs.
Barred owl after sundown - Sky still had some light as you can see.

Lone blue jay harassing a barred owl. In larger numbers blue jays will start pecking the owls head. In spite of the racket this blue jay made no friends came so he took off. Barred owls are opportunistic hunters. Blue jays are on the menu, so they harass the larger bird to get it to relocate to protect their territory/nests. I couldn't pick which one I liked the position of the jay in more so here's all.
