CSEA's June Macroeconomic Snapshot captures a paradox at the heart of Nigeria's story in early 2026.
Real GDP grew 3.89% in Q1 2026, up from 3.13% a year earlier, with non-oil sectors (96% of output) doing the heavy lifting. Trade, services, and agriculture are driving momentum, not crude.
Yet the poverty rate hit an estimated 63% in 2025, the seventh straight year of increase since 2019. Nearly 2 in 3 Nigerians now live below the poverty line, and 27 million faced food insecurity last fall.
The headline numbers are moving up. The kitchen table tells a different story.
Growth that doesn't reach the household isn't yet shared progress. Closing that gap calls for funded social protection, food security interventions, and reforms that bring down the cost of living for the most vulnerable.

Dr Adedeji Adeniran, Director of Research at the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA), recently presented key findings from the study, Balancing Trade Liberalisation with Public Health Protection Across Africa, at a webinar hosted by the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) on Wednesday, 24, 2026.
To ensure that trade integration and public health can coexist, he emphasised the need to align the WHO-FCTC protocol with the AfCFTA framework by implementing these measures:
✔️Exclude tobacco from tariff reductions and mandate higher excise taxes.
✔️Prohibit tobacco industry interference in policy processes.
✔️Ban tobacco advertising across all AfCFTA member states.
✔️Redirect AfCFTA investments toward sustainable agricultural alternatives.

The IMF has advised Nigeria to consider additional tax reforms to strengthen government revenue and support fiscal sustainability. Measures highlighted include increasing the VAT rate, extending VAT to fuel products, and introducing excise taxes on telecommunication services. However, the IMF stresses that reforms should consider Nigeria's poverty and food insecurity situation and be accompanied by a well-funded cash transfer system to support vulnerable households.
How do you think these proposed tax changes could affect households and businesses in
Nigeria?

In many Nigerian secondary schools, students are required to choose between science, arts, or commerce early in their academic journey. But how does this system shape the courses they can study and the opportunities available to them later in life?
In this episode of Research Table, we explore the practice of subject streaming in Nigeria’s secondary education system and its impact on students’ access to mathematics and science education. The discussion examines how fixed academic tracks influence skill development, particularly in quantitative subjects, and what this means for higher education.
