Glimpses of the just concluded 2-day #RISE_Conclave2026#Bengaluru.
The Conclave brought together on a single platform #StartUps, industry leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and academia to strengthen India's innovation ecosystem.
Discussed ways of upscaling indigenously developed technologies and their commercial translation, as well as resource mobilisation to seek “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, as envisaged by PM @narendramodi.
Ms. Navya Iyengar, Founder & Partner, LNN Evara Advisors, emphasized that as AI technologies become increasingly pervasive, governance, ethics, and risk management must evolve alongside innovation. She highlighted that technological risks have always existed, but with AI, these risks are becoming more dynamic and shape-shifting, demanding continuous oversight and adaptation.
She noted that while significant attention is being given to developing and deploying AI solutions, conversations around security, accountability, unintended consequences, and long-term societal implications often lag behind. Stressing the importance of governance before deployment, she advocated for robust policy frameworks, ethical guardrails, and codes of conduct that can help mitigate risks at scale. She underscored that responsible AI requires human judgment, discipline, and oversight to ensure that innovation remains secure, trustworthy, and aligned with societal values.

Mr. C.M. Patil, CEO, Krishikalpa Foundation, emphasized that successful start-ups are built not just on innovative ideas, but on a deep understanding of customer needs and market realities. He highlighted the critical role of incubators and mentors in shaping entrepreneurial thinking, helping founders engage with customers, validate their solutions, and demonstrate products directly to end-users, including farmers through FPOs and field-level interactions.
Reflecting on common reasons for start-up failure, he noted that many entrepreneurs assume their vision automatically aligns with market demand. Entrepreneurship, he stressed, is a challenging journey that requires constant learning, adaptation, and customer feedback.
Mr. Patil described passion as the spark that ignites a start-up, but ambition, capability, execution, and perseverance as the fuel that sustains it. He also underscored the importance of storytelling, conviction, and customer-centricity, reminding entrepreneurs that while revenue takes time to build, customers remain at the heart of every successful venture.

Dr. Rajeshwar S. Matche, Chief Scientist, Mentor & Head, Food Packaging Technology Department, CSIR-CFTRI Mysuru, opened the panel discussion on "Are We Solving the Right Problems? Aligning Academic Research with Industry Needs" by highlighting the importance of evaluating start-ups not just by their ideas, but by their ability to effectively bring products to market and create tangible impact.
He emphasized that India does not face a shortage of knowledge or research capability; the real challenge lies in converting knowledge into innovation, innovation into products, and products into societal and economic value. Stressing that creation and commercialization are central to a thriving start-up ecosystem, he set the stage for an engaging discussion where panellists would share their perspectives on bridging the gap between academic research and industry needs.

Dr. Chindi Vasudevappa, Chairman, Research Council, CSIR-CFTRI, emphasized the need for academic and research institutions to focus on solving real-world challenges rather than remaining confined to academic pursuits. He highlighted that a strong start-up ecosystem requires support at every stage—from ideation and innovation to commercialization and market adoption.
He stressed the importance of understanding industry requirements, building effective mentorship networks, and creating an enabling environment that encourages entrepreneurship and innovation. In the food sector, he underscored the critical role of quality assurance, safety standards, and certifications in ensuring market acceptance and consumer trust.
His key message was clear: impactful innovation emerges when research is aligned with industry needs, supported by robust mentorship, and driven by a commitment to solving practical problems.
