Judging by the pictures, America’s World Cup was a triumph: seas of celebrating fans, packed fan zones, confetti over MetLife. The numbers tell a different story. Hotel bookings ran below forecast in nearly every US host city, with roughly 80 percent of host markets pacing behind projections.

Kansas City missed expectations by almost 90 percent.

The international visitor forecast was slashed to around 1.24 million, a fraction of what underpinned the fabled 30.5 billion dollar economic impact model. New York’s hotel association cut its revenue forecast by 60 percent, its chief calling the tournament “overall a disappointment.”

European flights to the final dropped nearly 16 percent year on year.
The causes are no mystery: visa backlogs, punishing airfares, and a widespread reluctance among Europeans to holiday in Trump’s America. The world watched the World Cup. It just preferred to do so from home.
