How many times must we mourn a girl before the world acts?
In The Gambia, a 3-week-old baby has died after FGM. Her tiny body was mutilated by those who should have kept her safe. This is not tradition. It is violence. It is impunity. It is failure.
As @TheGirlGen, team lead, Dr. Jacinta Muteshi reminds us: outrage is necessary. Without it, there is only silence, and silence is complicity.

The proposed East African Community (EAC) Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Bill 2025 addresses the urgent need for a unified regional legal framework to effectively combat FGM, especially cross-border practices that persist due to legal loopholes and inconsistent enforcement across EAC Partner States. By harmonizing laws, definitions, penalties, and protective measures, the Bill aims to close existing gaps, enhance regional cooperation, and criminalize cross-border FGM. It also seeks to fulfill international and regional human rights commitments, combat the rising trend of medicalized FGM, and promote a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach including public awareness, survivor care, and education. The Bill further mandates the designation of national focal agencies to ensure coordinated enforcement and implementation at both national and regional levels. Below is a policy brief outlining the rationale and proposed provisions of the Bill.

"FGM is a significant barrier to the full participation of women and girls in life. The national prevalence of FGM stands at 14%. This number is too high. Eradication of FGM to 0% is within reach."@AFGMBoard CEO Madam Ipato Surum
