BREAKING: President Biden has announced that on Tuesday he will sign a proclamation to establish a national monument honoring Emmett Till and his mother Mamie Till-Mobley.
Details:
- The National Monument will span across 3 locations in Illinois and Mississippi, and according to The Independent will "protect places that are central to the story of Till's life and death at age 14, the acquittal of his white killers and his mother's activism, which helped spark the civil rights movement."
- Emmett Till was lynched as a teen in Mississippi in 1955 after being accused of whistling at a white woman.
- Tuesday is the anniversary of Till's birth in 1941.
This is an action that all Americans should be able to get behind.
Thank you Joe Biden.
Today, some of the books that shaped my life—and the lives of so many others—are being challenged by people who disagree with certain ideas or perspectives. And librarians are on the front lines, fighting every day to make the widest possible range of viewpoints, opinions, and ideas available to everyone.
On Juneteenth, we commemorate the anniversary of the delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest hours, there is cause to hope — and a reason to keep building a country that lives up to its highest ideals.
Happy #Juneteenth! Proud to celebrate June 19 as a federal AND state holiday this year, and to renew our commitment to teach a full and accurate account of American history -- both the good and the bad. #TeachTruth#EdJustice
The preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, issued Sept. 22, 1862 served as Lincoln's formal notification to the Confederacy of his intention to free all enslaved people in the rebellious states. 100 days later, on Jan. 1, 1863, Lincoln kept his word.
On our Street, we celebrate inclusion, belonging, and freedom of authentic self-expression. Happy #PrideMonth to all the people in our neighborhoods! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💗🤍🤎🖤
This weekend is the three year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. As you gather with family and friends on this Memorial Day weekend please take some time to reflect and dialogue on how we can make this world a safer place for black people. #saytheirnames
George Floyd should be alive today.
On the anniversary of his murder, we are reminded that true justice for George Floyd means listening and moving forward with intention to build a state where Black Minnesotans and Minnesotans of color are safe and protected.
The K-12 education bill now on the House floor contains life-changing funding and policy for students and educators – if the money is spent correctly at the district level. Thank you for all your work @CLYouakim and @lauriepryor! #mnleg#edmnvotes#fundourschools
