May 2026 marks 10 years since UNSC Resolution 2286 - protecting healthcare in armed conflict. 🇳🇿 is proud to have co-led this landmark effort with Egypt, Japan, Spain, & Uruguay in 2016.
The resolution was historic, the first of its kind on this issue & supported by over 80 countries - making it one of the most widely co-sponsored UNSC resolutions.
Yet attacks on medical workers & facilities continue. This is unacceptable. Protecting healthcare is not optional. This resolution matters as much today as it did in 2016.
MFAT teams in New York & Geneva will be marking the moment @NZUN@NZUNGVA
Valuable discussion with the UN Deputy Secretary General, @AminaJMohammed and Pacific Island Forum Ambassadors here at the NZ Mission today about key Pacific priorities including UN80 reforms, climate change and disaster response.

Today at the UNSC, 🇳🇿 called for de-escalation across the Middle East, urgent humanitarian access and assistance to Gaza and Lebanon, adherence to ceasefires, and respect for international law.
As the UNSC returns again to maritime security, 🇳🇿 stressed that repeated debates must lead to results.
Continued dialogue is important, but it is action that is essential to protect freedom of navigation and global supply routes under international law.
On 25 April, New Zealanders around the world remember the sacrifices of those who have served in conflicts, peacekeeping missions, and humanitarian operations around the world.
Today is a day to commemorate those who have experienced war and conflict: our veterans, our armed services personnel, families of the fallen, and our refugee communities. To honour the contribution of those who have served, and those who continue to serve. We will remember them.

🇳🇿 was honoured to give opening remarks at today's interactive dialogue on the 'Pact for the Future and the UN80 Initiative'.
Mutually reinforcing, these initiatives provide an opportunity to revitalise multilateralism and to make the UN fit-for-purpose.
The 🇺🇳 and its member states must move from words to action 🧰
In challenging times, close friends matter more than ever. So it was good to speak with Japanese Prime Minister @takaichi_sanae this afternoon.
With conflict having a very real human cost in the Middle East and causing economic pain here in the Indo-Pacific, we both want diplomacy to succeed and stability restored.
Prime Minister Takaichi and I agree on maintaining open supply chains as part of managing the impact of the crisis in the Indo-Pacific. Japan is a valued provider of fuel to New Zealand, and will continue to be.
I welcomed the Prime Minister’s briefing on Japan’s new defence exports regime and emphasised that Japan is an important security partner for New Zealand.
From Tlatelolco to Rarotonga, Nuclear‑Weapon‑Free Zones are the building blocks of the nuclear free architecture. These Zones contribute to the universalisation of the TPNW, drawing on regional leadership and experience and supporting practical accession pathways for small states.
Our thanks to @UruguayONU and @OPANAL for hosting this important side event.
🇳🇿 supports the UN SIDS Partnership Framework.
The Framework has the potential to serve as a mobilising and coordinating mechanism for the partnerships SIDS need.

If you travel to or through the Middle East, you may not be able to leave if conflict escalates.
Flights can change at short notice. Roads and borders can close. Even if your final destination is not in the Middle East your travel plans could still be disrupted. That is why we are still advising New Zealanders who are in the region to leave now on a commercial flight while these remain available, if they can do so safely.
At the moment we advise that New Zealanders do not travel (Level 4 of 4) to Qatar or the United Arab Emirates, due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East and the current risk posed by military strikes and armed conflict. This includes stop overs at Dubai International Airport, Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, or Hamad International Airport in Doha.
Emirates and Etihad Airways continue to operate flights to New Zealand (including via Australia and other destinations). Qatar Airways is operating a number of special flights, including to Australian destinations.
The most up to date and reliable flight information can be obtained from the airlines’ websites. Please check your flight’s status and your airline’s website for operational information, before travelling to the airport.
Since this conflict began, we have worked closely with the airlines to support flight connectivity for New Zealanders. We are grateful to Emirates, Qatar and Etihad for their support in making more flight options available for Kiwis to get home.
