Someone who can focus on knowing these books, having the budget to purchase them and then matching them with a child at the best time is essential. All of this helps to build strong foundations of literacy, of enjoying reading and of knowing themselves and others better.
Excellent article, with many key points! Personally 'books for kids of that age don’t get reviewed. Kids aren’t old enough to buy them themselves; parents don’t know that they exist. Discovery is a huge problem' is why a School Library AND Librarian is so vital!
Of interest to parents of young children...
There's an invisible problem with children’s books, that makes it unnecessarily hard for kids to start reading on their own.
I wrote about it for the Irish Times. Link in next tweet (to stop Elon suppressing this one completely)...
A few days after the @uksla weekend conference & I finally have my thoughts in order having read my notes over & processed the many, many conversations I had with people! Such an interesting, enlightening and entertaining time! Thanks everyone for their contributions!
@verityisreading@uksla I am! 😁 although nervous about presenting a lightning talk next 😬
We’ll have to plan to come to the next one - Librarians on tour!!
Half way through the first day of the @uksla conference and the buzz of being with others talking all things school library is brilliant! #SchoolLibrariesUnleashed
@verity_robson I’ve also got a back list of shorter adult books I’ve enjoyed if that’s what you fancy? Can’t be doing with these 500 page monsters right now 🤣
@verity_robson You should never feel like a bad librarian! But I know how easy it is to do so - the weeks fly by with ‘life’ 🤣 I try to have an audio book for when I’m putting the washing away etc so even if I don’t turn paper pages some days I’ve read something.
Mustn’t forget there were lots of chats with staff and students that didn’t involve borrowing books as well! So lots of talking, less Development Plan assessing taking place….let’s see what tomorrow brings!
Sometimes Mondays are hard-the to do list grows & it feels like nothing is getting finished or moves on. But then the usage statistics report arrives, highlighting just how many book interactions happened last week & that feels good! Plus explains why the desk is a mess 🤣
Thank you @Scoobiesue2 and @SomersetCbg for a brilliant #NNFN2023 day - really fascinating to hear @isabelwriting, @andyseedauthor, @nicolakidsbooks and am now plotting how to get more of these amazing books into children’s hands!
