I am shocked that many people don't understand that:

The Witcher games aren't adapting the story of the books, they are non-canon sequels to these books.

The Witcher 1-3 is entirely non-canon to the books but the books are canon to it, they take place years after the events in the books and invent a ton of lore and canon to support their own stories that CD Projekt Red wanted to tell, These games are quite literally to their soul, basically fan fiction by superfans of these books that goes super hard and managed to surpass the original work
