Thanks to @bruyerehealth for inviting me to the September 12 LTC Community Engagement Day! We had a blast handing out certificates to engaged residents of their community. I also got to try out their Cycling Without Age bike and check out the Elder Wisdom bench!
Shout-out to the amazing CEO Peggy Taillon—my athleisure twin—for her leadership and energy. Bruyère is improving the lives of seniors every day, and we are lucky to have them in Ward 12. 💚
In the Netherlands, where the Dutch invest in safe cycling infrastructure, the over-65s cycle around a quarter of their journeys, and the over-80s cycle around 10% of their journeys.
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and cycle lanes don't 'restrict freedom', they expand it.

What can we do to extend the benefits of cycling to everyone in our communities?

Toronto won’t solve congestion by relying on officers waving cars through intersections. The real issue is the sheer volume of vehicles entering the core. Our sprawling region means any new capacity is quickly filled with more cars.
This car-centric approach only worsens the problem.
As a dense urban city, Toronto must focus on:
1. Promoting transit: Visitors should be encouraged to use public transport like the UP Express. Pearson International should feature clear signage urging people to take transit rather than drive into the core.
2. Walkability: Let visitors know that driving into downtown is not practical. Instead of pretending there’s space, we should be honest and promote parking-and-walking as the better option.
3. Expanding bike share: Discounted day passes and widespread advertising of bike share can get visitors moving easily. Expand stations, run free blitz days, and place ambassadors at Union Station to assist newcomers.
4. Congestion pricing: The most effective tool for reducing congestion, as seen in London and NYC. Since NYC implemented charges for rideshare vehicles, getting around has become noticeably easier—Toronto should follow suit.
Toronto’s stuck in the past, clinging to outdated solutions. It’s time to adopt forward-thinking strategies to meet the needs of our growing population and sprawling region. We have the tools—we just need the will.

"The future of cycling is actually not so much about cycling, but about the future of cities.
Cycling is not the goal in itself; it's a fantastic transformational tool to make cities more resilient, sustainable, social, safe, wealthy, healthy and happy."

Have you signed up for Cycle55+ Ride & Dine? Happening tomorrow (Monday August 19th). It's your chance to explore some great cycling routes and the fabulous Sorauren Farmer's Market (with live jazz!!!). #bikeTO Photo credit: Sorauren Farmer's Market
"Public transit, bikes and pedestrians take up a lot less of the road. I think anything cities can do to encourage shifts toward transit or cycling will help decrease the demand for road space."

I'm not great at estimating crowd size but I'd say there are about 2 million people out walking and wheeling for #LivingStreets today 😀
⬇️Here's the first half of the group!
Vehicular cycling is impressive. It's also for a tiny % of the population.
You can be an athletic cyclist and still appreciate the value of a safe system approach to transportation. Protected bike lanes are part of a safe system.

Almost 75% of school-aged children cycle to school in the Netherlands. Active travel comes with many physical and mental benefits for children.
Studies have shown that kids in the Netherlands who walk or cycle to school tend to perform better on tasks that require concentration.
“There’s a lot of people in care homes, and all kinds of places, who don’t get outdoors. They’re not getting out in the fresh air, and seeing things, feeling that sensation – the wind in your hair." - Clara Clark, Cycling Without Age Ireland
