Always inspiring to meet @Sida and @JakobWernerman.
Our partnership is all about keeping support for refugees strong and sustainable, especially amid funding cuts that risk reversing hard-won progress.
We value 🇸🇪 Sida’s renewed humanitarian support and leadership.
UNHCR is at #arendalsuka 🇳🇴. On the agenda: the UN, humanitarian aid, and what Norway can do.
Day 1 takeaways:
👉Conflicts rising, aid budgets shrinking, political will shifting
👉The UN has always faced crises
👉Aid = stability
👉We must stay the course - even when it’s tough.
Sweden doesn’t just talk about global challenges—we actively support the UN to address them. As a key contributor to the UN’s development system, Sweden provides voluntary financial support. In 2023, Sweden contributed 14.7B SEK to the UN development system, with 40% to core funding and the rest as multi-bi contributions aligned with government priorities.
Sweden partners with key UN agencies like UNDP, UNHCR, and UN Women to advance human rights, promote peace, and support sustainable development globally.
🔹 1.24B SEK to UNHCR – 3rd largest core donor
🔹 413M SEK to UNDP – 5th largest core donor
🔹 90M SEK to UN Women – largest bilateral donor
Delivering impactful results, driving change globally.

More than 50,000 Lebanese and Syrians living in Lebanon have now crossed into Syria fleeing Israeli airstrikes. Well over 200,000 are displaced inside Lebanon.
Relief operations are underway, including by UNHCR, to help all those in need, in coordination with both governments.
As conflict rages on in Sudan, displacement and needs continue to soar.
Humanitarians now need $1 billion, twice what was initially required after the conflict started, to support millions fleeing the country.
Action can no longer be delayed!

"Why are our children different?"
Jokino is one of the 40,000 internally displaced people who live in the Protection of Civilians site (POC) in Malakal.
He tells us about his desire for peace, his hopes for the future, and how he wants to love his country. 🇸🇸

At the Can Coya Farming Cooperative, former refugees and the local community are working together to clear 250 acres of bushland and turn it into a productive farm. Now they are feeding themselves and their community while scaling their business & teaching others to do the same.
In Magwi, the Women's Peace Group, led by Rose, a former refugee, is leading peace efforts in the community. In 2016, she and 5 other women set out on foot for a rebel base to demand their husbands, sons, and brothers lay down their arms. Now the group has 35 members.
Yesterday we were glad to welcome🇨🇭🇸🇪🇫🇮🇧🇪🇱🇺🇵🇱 to Magwi—a 'Pocket of Hope' in #SouthSudan.
Former #refugees are choosing to return home to areas of relative stability in 🇸🇸. UNHCR supports returnees and communities in these areas, fostering peace & stability from the ground up.
Very informative article about #SouthSudan and our work in the @Telegraph.
Those who contributed least to #climatechange are now seeing the worst of its impacts.

This week, Pope Francis is visiting DR Congo and #SouthSudan, two countries that have seen long-standing conflict with large-scale displacement, and whose people need peace.🕊️
❗️Did you know? South Sudan's refugee crisis remains the largest in Africa with over 2.3M refugees.
Former #refugee and LA @Lakers's power forward @WenyenGabriel returned home to #SouthSudan for the first time last year to retrace his roots and shine a light on South Sudan's displacement crisis.
Watch Wenyen come home and bring his message of hope⬇️

Today, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our new UNHCR Country Representative, Ms. @MarieHVerney, who officially presented her credentials to the Honorable Mayiik Ayii Deng,🇸🇸Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, this morning.

Människorna i Sydsudan behöver vår hjälp.

"[Floods] worsen the impact of the conflict. The water makes it difficult for people to flee and is also a major logistical obstacle to providing emergency aid"

Since 2021 large swathes of South Sudan are flooded. 2 million people may remain permanently displaced from their homes. They need immediate & long term solutions.
Yet, if efficiently managed, water constitutes the nation’s most valuable resource & could drive its development.
