2025 Sports in Kansas 1A Defensive Player of the Year
Andre Johnson – Rossville (Sr.)

Rossville senior linebacker Andre Johnson has been named the 2025 Sports in Kansas 1A Defensive Player of the Year. Johnson, a fearless, hard-hitting playmaker, piled up 133 tackles for head coach Derick Hammes and the 1A state runner-up Bulldawgs. It marks back-to-back 100+ tackle seasons for the Dawg standout in what is widely regarded as the toughest small-school football league in Kansas (Big East).

Johnson was selected to compete in the Native All-American Football Game on Sunday, December 14 at U.S. Bank Stadium (home of the Minnesota Vikings), where he will represent the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

Not just a defensive anchor, Johnson also delivered nearly 500 yards of total offense with 13 TDs, thriving in short-yardage and physical goal-line situations. A compact force at 6-0, 211 pounds, he’s described by opposing coaches as someone who “is always where the ball is.”

Special consideration for Sterling sophomore Jacob Lewis finished second in the voting in a narrow race. #sportsinkansas
