I shared a few thoughts on the new leadership at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and how it will have to navigate the fact that central banks are increasingly becoming geoeconomic actors in this article by @TheBanker
Pablo Hernández de Cos, former Bank of Spain governor, will lead the BIS from July 2025. As former BCBS chair, his role will be key amid shifting US banking regulations and EU calls for flexibility.

Can we predict the future? What are the politics of data-driven security models, scenarios and forecasts?
@AnwarTasniem, Andreas Oberprantacher & I are proposing an EWIS workshop @europeanisa on that topic. 2-4 July, Krakow. Interested? Then drop me a pm or email until 14 Nov!
Just ordered an Espresso in #Kyiv, the barista asked if I didn’t want something stronger. Asked how they’re doing this morning, his colleague says „bad“, tears in her eyes. 🇺🇦
The @BIS_org has handed over the mBridge cross border #CBDC payment project to the central banks involved
It follows discussion of a BRICS Bridge payment system
The BIS will not engage in projects that are a conduit to violate sanctions

This is quite remarkable.
The BIS leaves the most advanced cross-border CBDC project. mBridge replaces correspondent banks and SWIFT with a corridor network (mBridge) for cross-border payments, establishing direct payment relations between China, UAE, Hong Kong, and Thailand.
mBridge - the most advanced wholesale CBDC project in the world- is being halted possibly over sanctions evasion concerns. But note that the BIS leaving the project doesn’t mean China can’t continue it in a new arrangement. The tech is built.
This episode of The Daily is a great piece of political sociolgogy. Life stories, personal economics, gender roles and their link to political choices.
Wondering how these narratives and experiences translate to other countries.
