In 1992, Ronnie James Dio quit Black Sabbath rather than open for Ozzy. “I’m not supporting a clown,” he told Iommi.

So Rob Halford stepped in on almost no notice. Here he is singing “N.I.B.” with Sabbath at Costa Mesa.

One of the rarest lineups in metal.

This song is timeless. Released in 1969 before most of use were born, but just as good in 2026.

“Gimme Shelter” – The Voice That Saved It, the Live Fire, and the Song That Signaled the End of the World

On a stage glittering with multicolored lights, Mick Jagger stands center frame in a loose white shirt and flared pants. His voice is tight, slightly raw, carrying an unease that’s hard to shake. Behind him the band plays with real intensity. This isn’t just a performance. It immediately raises the question that has followed “Gimme Shelter” for more than half a century: why did such a dark song become one of the Rolling Stones’ most important works, and why did a woman’s voice end up as its true soul?

The clearest answer lives in the studio recording. Merry Clayton was called in the middle of the night, pregnant, to add backing vocals. Her “Rape, murder…” section is not decoration. It is the moment the song detonates. Clayton’s voice is powerful and desperate at the same time — beautiful and brutal. When she tears into those words, the entire atmosphere shifts. Mick Jagger supplies the danger and the foreboding, but it is Clayton who makes the song unforgettable. This is one of the rare cases where a female voice doesn’t just support a male-led track — it rescues and completes it.

In the version captured in the video, the focus locks onto Mick Jagger. He uses his whole body and his eyes to transmit that same sense of dread. The way he leans, the way he looks upward, the way his voice cracks at the peaks — all of it creates a hot, immediate energy. Jagger turns the stage into the place where the song is happening right now, not merely being retold. The fierce backing vocal still cuts through, making the already dark atmosphere even sharper.

The historical moment that produced “Gimme Shelter” only deepens its weight. The late 1960s were drowning in chaos: the Vietnam War, assassinations, riots, street violence. The song arrived like a warning. The lyrics never name a specific event, yet the feeling is unmistakable — something is breaking apart, and no one can find shelter. The slow groove, the guitar riff that slices like a blade, everything builds the impression of an approaching apocalypse. That feeling wasn’t invented later. It was already there when the song was written.

Many people ask whether “Gimme Shelter” is the Rolling Stones’ greatest song. Compared with “Satisfaction,” “Paint It Black,” or “Sympathy for the Devil,” it lacks easy catchiness and an immediately hummable melody. But that lack of comfort is exactly its strength. It never tries to please the listener. It demands that you face the unease head-on. Combined with Merry Clayton’s irreplaceable contribution, the song reaches a level of completeness rare even in the Stones’ catalog.

The most frightening and most admirable thing about “Gimme Shelter” is that it has never agreed to become a comfortable song. It still stands there, cold and sharp, refusing to be tamed. Every time Merry Clayton’s voice rips through the air, every time Mick Jagger lets the dread pour out of his body, the listener is pushed back into the proper place: not someone being comforted, but someone forced to look straight at the chaos. The song doesn’t need to be loved in the usual way. It only needs to be remembered — and it has done that better than almost anything else.
